Rodent Exclusion: Stainless Steel Mesh vs. Everything Mice Laugh At

Exclusion is a fancy word for “close every door a mouse can use.” It’s the difference between catching mice every winter forever and not having them at all.

Quick answer: Rodent exclusion means sealing every gap mice and rats use to get inside with materials they can’t chew. Stainless steel or copper mesh packed with sealant, galvanized hardware cloth, metal flashing and cement hold up. Foam, caulk or steel wool alone do not.

Materials: what works and what gets eaten

Material Rodent-proof? Best for
Stainless steel mesh (packed + sealed) ✅ Yes, won’t rust Gaps around pipes, lines, sill plates
Copper mesh ✅ Yes, won’t rust Same as stainless; easy to shape
Galvanized hardware cloth (¼”) ✅ Yes Vents, crawl spaces, under decks
Metal flashing / sheet metal ✅ Yes Roof gaps, corners, garage door edges
Cement / mortar ✅ Yes Foundation cracks and holes
Steel wool 🟡 For a while Rusts and gets pulled apart
Expanding foam alone ❌ No Rodent marshmallow
Caulk alone ❌ No Fine on top of mesh, useless by itself
Plastic or vinyl covers ❌ No Chewed through in a night or two

What our exclusion work for mice includes

  1. A full outside inspection — foundation, sill plate, utility entries, garage, vents, roofline.
  2. Sealing every gap with steel, copper, hardware cloth, flashing or cement.
  3. Door sweeps and garage door seals where needed.
  4. Pest-safe vent guards (including dryer vents, done safely).
  5. Trapping or monitoring inside until activity stops.
  6. Photos of what we found and fixed.
Don’t block weep holes in brick with mortar. They let water drain out of the wall. Use vents made for weep holes instead.

Common questions

What is rodent exclusion?

Sealing every gap mice and rats use to get into a building with materials they can’t chew, so new rodents can’t get in.

What mesh is rodent-proof?

Stainless steel or copper mesh (they don’t rust) and ¼-inch galvanized hardware cloth.

Can mice chew through expanding foam?

Yes, easily. Foam should only be used together with steel or copper mesh.

Does steel wool keep mice out?

For a while, but it rusts and mice can pull it apart. Stainless steel or copper mesh lasts much longer.
