Prospect Park is one of the smallest towns in Passaic County, well under a square mile, tucked between Paterson, Haledon and Hawthorne. Streets are lined with one- and two-family homes on narrow lots, many of them older, with driveways and small backyards that run right up to the neighbors.

Eastern subterranean termites live in the soil all over North Jersey and come up into wood that touches or sits close to the ground: sill plates, porch posts, basement stairs, door frames near the slab. In spring, swarmers or a pile of discarded wings by a basement window is often the first sign. Mud tubes on the foundation wall are the other giveaway.
