Skunk emergency? What to do right now
Most skunk calls start with one of these. Here's what to do while you wait for us:
Your dog got sprayed
Keep the dog outside if you can. Check the eyes β if they're red or the dog is pawing at them, rinse with plain water and call your vet. A common home wash is hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a little dish soap, mixed fresh and kept away from the eyes. Never store it in a closed bottle.
Skunk stuck in a window well, pool or garage
Keep people and pets inside and give it space. Skunks spray when they feel cornered. In a garage, open the door and leave it alone after dark. In a window well, call us β don't reach in.
Skunk acting sick in daylight
Stumbling, circling, unusually bold or paralyzed skunks can be a rabies risk. Keep everyone away and call your local animal control or health department. If a person or pet was bitten or scratched, call a doctor or vet right away.
Skunk living under the deck or shed
Don't block the hole yet β you could trap the skunk, or babies, underneath. Text us a photo of the opening and we'll plan the removal.
Skunk spray in the eyes of a person: flush with lots of clean water and call a doctor if it still burns.
Is it a skunk? How to tell who's under your deck
Several North Jersey animals dig under decks, sheds and porches. The signs are different:
| Sign | Skunk | Groundhog | Raccoon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hole | Fist-sized, neat opening under a deck, step or shed | Large burrow with a big dirt mound, often several entrances | Uses gaps more than digging; tears at vents and lattice |
| Lawn damage | Small cone-shaped holes dug overnight (hunting grubs) | Eats garden plants and clover | Rolls back strips of sod like a carpet |
| When active | Night, dusk and early morning | Daytime | Night |
| Smell | Musky odor near the hole, strong if it sprays | None | None, but droppings in one spot |
| Where else | Under porches, slabs, crawl spaces, window wells | Under sheds and along foundations | Attics, chimneys, garages |
If the noise is overhead, it's not a skunk β see how raccoons get in the attic or raccoon in the chimney. If it turns out to be a groundhog, we handle groundhog removal and exclusion too, with the same buried L-shaped mesh.
Why skunks move in around North Jersey homes
Skunks do well in suburbs. Bergen, Passaic and Essex county neighborhoods give them everything they need: grubs in lawns, open trash and compost, fallen bird seed, pet food left on porches, and dry, sheltered spaces under decks, sheds, porches and concrete stoops.
- Low decks and sheds on blocks are the number-one den site. A skunk only needs a gap about the size of a fist to get under.
- Porches and stoops with hollow space under them β common on older homes β make warm winter dens.
- Lawns with grubs attract skunks at night. Little holes all over the yard in the morning are often their work.
- Homes near parks, rail lines, brooks and wooded lots see more traffic, because skunks travel those edges.
Removing food sources helps, but as long as the den space is open, the next skunk will find it. That's why the fix is exclusion. See animal proofing and exclusion.
Skunk season in New Jersey: when timing matters
| Time of year | What skunks are doing | What it means for removal |
|---|---|---|
| February β March | Mating season; males roam widely | More road smell and more spraying; dens under decks get claimed |
| April β June | Babies (kits) born and kept in the den | Never seal a den now without checking for young β they'll die under the deck and smell |
| July β August | Mothers and kits leave the den at night together | Families can be moved out and the den sealed once all are out |
| September β November | Young skunks find their own dens; heavy grub digging | Good time to skunk-proof decks and sheds before winter |
| December β January | Less active, sheltering in dens during cold spells | Dens under porches and slabs are in use; plan removal carefully |
Finding baby animals somewhere they shouldn't be? Our baby animal season guide explains why timing matters for every species.
How professional skunk removal works
Inspection
We find every opening under the deck, shed, porch or slab, check for babies, and look for signs of other animals.
Getting the skunk out
The skunk is removed or encouraged out with methods that keep it calm and keep it from spraying, handled the way NJ wildlife rules require. We're licensed by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Exclusion barrier
We close the space with heavy wire mesh, buried and bent outward at the bottom (an L-shaped footer), so skunks can't dig back under. More on entry point sealing.
Odor control and cleanup
If a skunk sprayed or denned under the house, we do odor control and HEPA cleanup.
Skunk smell under the house or deck
Skunk odor doesn't just fade from a crawl space or under a porch. The oily spray soaks into soil, wood and insulation, and on humid days it can come right back up through floors and vents. A skunk that died under a deck or slab adds a second smell on top.
Our odor work starts with removing the source: the animal, soiled nesting material, and contaminated insulation if it's in a crawl space. Then we clean and treat the area, using HEPA equipment where it's needed, and replace insulation if it's ruined. Opening windows and spraying air freshener only masks it for a day.
Smell inside the house and no skunk in sight? Check the basement, crawl space and any window wells, and tell us when the smell is strongest β that helps us find where it's coming from.
What affects the cost of skunk removal?
Quotes are free and given after we see the property. These are what change the size of the job:
| Factor | Smaller job | Bigger job |
|---|---|---|
| Den site | One small opening under a shed | A long deck, porch or addition with many gaps |
| Animals | One skunk | A mother with kits |
| Exclusion | A short run of buried mesh | Full perimeter barrier around a large deck |
| Odor | None, or a little outside | Sprayed under the house, in a crawl space or garage |
| Repairs | None | Lattice, skirting, vents or insulation to replace |
Call or text 973-510-2585 with a photo of the opening and where it is.
Skunk removal myths that don't work
Mothballs and ammonia rags
Mothballs aren't made for this use, and the fumes are harmful to people and pets. Skunks often ignore both.
Lights and radios
May annoy a skunk for a night or two. They rarely make it leave a good den.
Trapping it yourself
Getting sprayed is likely, and you then have a live wild animal with rules about what can be done with it.
Blocking the hole
Without knowing if the skunk β or babies β are inside, you can trap them under the deck.

Skunk Removal Questions in New Jersey
Who do I call for skunk removal in NJ?
Call a wildlife company licensed by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife. Silver Bullet Pest Control is licensed for wildlife work and serves Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties from Garfield, plus parts of Morris and Union counties. For a skunk acting sick or a bite, call your local animal control or health department first.
How do I get a skunk out from under my deck?
The skunk has to leave or be removed first, and then the space has to be sealed with buried wire mesh so it can't dig back in. Don't block the hole until you know the den is empty, especially from April to June when babies may be inside. We handle both steps.
Do you offer emergency skunk removal?
Same-day visits are often available for urgent skunk problems, like a skunk in a window well, garage or under the house, especially near our base in Garfield. Call or text 973-510-2585 early with a photo. Farther towns are usually scheduled ahead, with same-day sometimes possible.
How much does skunk removal cost?
It depends on how big the den site is, whether there's a mother with babies, how much exclusion barrier is needed, and whether odor cleanup or repairs are part of the job. Quotes are free after we see the property; a photo of the opening helps us give you an idea sooner.
How do I get skunk smell out of my house?
First find and remove the source: a skunk denning under the house, soiled material, or contaminated insulation. Air out the area and wash fabrics. If the smell keeps coming back on humid days, the spray has soaked into soil, wood or insulation, and needs professional odor control and cleanup.
What do I do if my dog gets sprayed by a skunk?
Keep the dog outside, check its eyes and rinse them with water if they're irritated, and call your vet if they stay red. A fresh mix of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a little dish soap is a common home wash; keep it out of the eyes and never store it in a closed container.
Are skunks dangerous?
Skunks are usually shy and spray only when threatened, but they're one of the animals that can carry rabies in New Jersey. A skunk that seems sick, very bold or unsteady in daylight should be avoided. If anyone is bitten or scratched, call a doctor or vet and your local health department right away.
Why are there small holes all over my lawn?
Small cone-shaped holes that appear overnight are often skunks digging for grubs and other insects. Raccoons tend to roll back strips of sod instead. Reducing grubs can help, but if a skunk is living under your deck or shed, it will keep coming back until the den is sealed.
Can I trap a skunk myself?
We don't recommend it. Trapping a skunk often ends with someone getting sprayed, and there are state rules about handling and releasing wildlife. A licensed wildlife company can remove it safely and seal the den so another skunk doesn't move in.
When are baby skunks born?
In New Jersey, baby skunks are usually born in spring, roughly April through June, and stay in the den for several weeks before following their mother out at night. That's why we always check for young before sealing a den in spring and early summer.
