What to do while you wait for us
Stinging nest
Keep everyone, especially kids and pets, away and indoors. Don't spray the nest, knock it down or plug the hole — that's when people get stung. Anyone with trouble breathing or swelling after a sting needs 911.
Bat inside
Close the room door and put a towel under it so the bat stays in one room. Keep pets out. If the bat may have touched someone — or was in a room where someone was sleeping — don't let it go; call your doctor or local health department.
Rats or mice
Put food away in sealed containers. Don't sweep or vacuum droppings dry. Keep pets and kids away from any traps or bait you already put down.
Bed bugs
Don't move to another bedroom or the couch — that spreads them. Don't set off bug bombs. Bag the bedding, wash and dry it on high heat, and keep the room as it is so we can inspect.
A wild animal inside the house
Raccoons, squirrels, skunks and bats get into North Jersey homes through chimneys, attic vents, rooflines, open doors and garages. When one ends up in the living space, the goal is to keep everyone safe and keep the animal contained until we arrive.
- Keep your distance. Don't try to catch, corner or hit the animal. A frightened animal will bite or scratch.
- Close interior doors to keep it in one room, and get pets out of that area.
- Give it a way out if it's safe: for a squirrel or raccoon in a room with an outside door or window, open it and step away. Many leave on their own.
- Don't feed it or leave food out to lure it.
