Ridgefield or Ridgefield Park? Two different towns

People mix them up all the time, so first things first. Ridgefield is a borough in southern Bergen County, bordered by Palisades Park, Fairview, Cliffside Park, North Bergen and Ridgefield Park. Ridgefield Park is a separate village just to the northwest, across Overpeck Creek. They share part of a name and a border, but they're two different municipalities with their own town halls and police.

Hill, creek and highways: what shapes pests in Ridgefield

Much of Ridgefield sits on higher ground that slopes down to the west toward Overpeck Creek and the edge of the Meadowlands. Route 1&9 and Route 46 cross the borough, and Broad Avenue carries shops and restaurants north into Palisades Park. The result is a mix of quiet residential streets, newer multi-family buildings and busy commercial strips in a small area.

For pests, that means three different settings:

• The low side near the creek and the highways: wetter soil and more open, overgrown edges. Expect Norway rats, mosquitoes and the occasional raccoon or opossum moving up from the wooded banks.
• The residential streets on the hill: older houses with basements, attics and mature trees. Mice in fall, squirrels at the roof line, carpenter ants in damp wood, termites where wood meets soil.
• The commercial corridors: restaurants, food stores and warehouses with dumpsters and deliveries. Rodents and German roaches follow the food.

Townhouses, condos and two-families: pests that share walls

Ridgefield has a lot of attached and stacked housing: townhouse rows, condo buildings and older two-family homes. In those buildings, the two pests that cause the most trouble are German roaches and bed bugs, because both move between units through outlets, pipe gaps and shared walls.

What actually works in shared buildings:

• Treat the source, not just the complaint. If one townhouse has roaches, the units on both sides should at least be checked.
• Skip the bug bombs. Foggers push roaches and bed bugs deeper into the walls and into the neighbor's unit.
• Bring in the association or the landlord early. Condo boards and landlords can arrange access to several units at once.
