Squirrel Proofing in New Jersey

Scratching above the ceiling at sunrise, a chewed hole in the soffit, or a squirrel running along the gutter and disappearing under the roof — that’s a squirrel living in your house. Squirrel proofing gets them out humanely and seals the house so they can’t come back.

Why squirrels get in

Gray squirrels look for a warm, dry, protected place to nest — and an attic is perfect. They climb trees, siding, downspouts and utility lines, then chew to enlarge any small gap. Their favorite spots on New Jersey homes:

  • Roof returns (where the roofline meets the gutter at the corners)
  • Gaps behind gutters and at the drip edge
  • Soffit and fascia joints, especially aluminum or vinyl
  • Gable and ridge vents with thin screens
  • Plumbing vent pipes and roof vents
  • Spots where tree limbs touch the roof

Once inside they shred insulation for nests, chew wires and wood, and leave droppings and urine. Squirrels’ teeth never stop growing, which is why they chew constantly — and why squirrel damage gets worse every week they stay.

What squirrel proofing includes

  • Full roofline and attic inspection — every opening, not just the active one
  • One-way exclusion doors so squirrels leave and can’t return
  • Sealing with heavy-gauge galvanized steel mesh and metal flashing — not foam or plastic
  • Vent screening and chimney caps
  • Repair of chewed soffit, fascia and roof returns (wildlife damage repair)
  • Follow-up check to confirm the house is empty and sealed

How it works

  1. Inspect: We check the whole roofline, vents, soffits, chimney and attic, find every opening — not just the one the animal is using — and look for babies.
  2. Exclude: One-way doors go on the active holes so the animals leave on their own and can’t get back in.
  3. Seal: Every other gap is closed with heavy-gauge galvanized steel mesh and metal flashing animals can’t chew through.
  4. Confirm and close: Once the animals are out we remove the doors, seal those holes and check the attic.
  5. Repair: Chewed soffits, fascia, vents and roof returns are repaired, and damaged insulation can be cleaned up.

Squirrel season in New Jersey

Gray squirrels have two litters a year. The first babies are born in late winter to early spring, the second in mid to late summer. In fall and winter, squirrels move into attics for warmth. If there could be babies, we check before closing anything — sealing a mother out and her babies in causes damage, smell and a much bigger problem. See baby squirrel and raccoon season.

Tip: Squirrels are active by day. Noise at dawn and late afternoon usually means squirrels; noise in the middle of the night usually means mice, rats, flying squirrels or raccoons. More in noises in the attic.

Why trapping alone doesn’t fix it

Trapping a few squirrels doesn’t close the hole — the next squirrel moves in, often within weeks, following the scent the last ones left behind. New Jersey also regulates trapping and relocating wildlife. Exclusion plus sealing solves the cause.

Signs you have squirrels

  • Scratching, rolling or running sounds in the ceiling or walls, mainly in the morning and evening
  • Chewed holes at roof corners, soffits or vents
  • Squirrels going in and out at the roofline
  • Shredded insulation, droppings or nesting material in the attic
  • Lights flickering or outlets not working (chewed wires)

Squirrel Proofing — FAQ

How do you get squirrels out of the attic?

We install one-way doors on the holes they’re using. Squirrels leave to feed and can’t get back in. Every other gap is sealed with steel, then the doors come off and those holes are sealed too.

How long does squirrel proofing take?

Sealing is usually done in one visit. The one-way doors stay up a few days until the squirrels are out, then we come back to seal the last holes.

Will the squirrels come back?

Not through sealed openings. We use heavy-gauge galvanized steel mesh and metal flashing, which squirrels can’t chew through. If a new spot is ever opened, call us.

Can squirrels chew through foam or plastic vent covers?

Yes, easily. Spray foam, plastic and thin aluminum screening slow them down for days at most. Use steel.

What if there are baby squirrels?

We check first. Babies are removed by hand and placed so the mother can retrieve them, or we wait until they are old enough to leave before sealing.
