Why Oradell gets so many yard and wildlife calls

Oradell is a leafy borough in central Bergen County. The Hackensack River runs through town and widens into the Oradell Reservoir to the north, and many streets are lined with mature oaks and maples. Most homes are single-family houses with real yards, and a good number of them have been standing for decades.

That's a pleasant place to live, and it's also a pleasant place for:

• Ticks. Deer and mice move along the wooded edges near the reservoir and river, and ticks wait in tall grass, leaf litter and the shady border between lawn and woods.
• Mosquitoes. Clogged gutters, birdbaths, kids' toys and low spots in the lawn hold water after a storm.
• Squirrels and raccoons. Branches that touch the roof are a ladder. Squirrels chew into the soffit or a roof vent; raccoons tear open a vent or chimney top.
• Carpenter ants. Big trees mean old stumps, dead limbs and damp wood, and carpenter ants follow branches and wires from those trees into the house.
• Yellow jackets. Ground nests in lawns and garden beds, often found the hard way by whoever is mowing.

Because so much of the trouble starts outside, an Oradell visit usually includes a walk of the yard, the tree line and the roof edge, not only the inside of the house.
