Fleas tonight? What to do in the first 24 hours

1

Call your vet

Every dog and cat in the home needs vet-recommended flea treatment, at the same time. Treating the house without the pets, or the pets without the house, rarely works.

2

Vacuum everything

Carpets, rugs, under furniture, couch cushions and pet beds. Empty the vacuum outside into a sealed bag right away.

3

Wash the bedding hot

Pet beds, throws, blankets and your own bedding if pets sleep with you. Wash hot and dry on high heat.

4

Call or text us

Send a photo of the bug and tell us how many rooms are affected. Same-day appointments are often available.

Skip the foggers. Bug bombs don't reach under furniture or deep into carpet where flea eggs and larvae live, and they leave a residue on every surface.

Why a flea problem explodes so fast

The adult fleas you see are only a small part of the problem. Most of the infestation is hidden in the carpet, floor cracks and furniture as eggs, larvae and pupae.

  • Eggs: an adult female on your pet lays eggs that fall off wherever the pet walks, sleeps and sits.
  • Larvae: hatch in a few days and hide deep in carpet fibers and cracks, away from light.
  • Pupae: spin protected cocoons that most products can't get through. They can wait for weeks until they sense warmth, movement or vibration.
  • Adults: jump onto the first warm body that walks by, pet or person, and start feeding.

That last point explains a common emergency: you move into a house or apartment that had pets, or come home from a trip, and suddenly you're covered in bites. Pupae were waiting in the carpet, and your footsteps woke them all at once. Warm, humid weather in a New Jersey summer speeds the whole cycle up.

Where the fleas came from

Finding the source matters, or the fleas come back after treatment. These are the three we see most:

No pets?

Wildlife in the attic or crawl space

  • Bites but no pets in the house
  • Noises in the attic or walls
  • Fleas near closets, vents or ceilings

Raccoons, squirrels, opossums and feral cats carry fleas. When they nest in an attic, crawl space or under a porch, the fleas can drop into the house, especially after the animal leaves.

Animals under the porch or deck

  • Fleas on pets after time in the yard
  • Animal activity under the deck or shed
  • Bites on the lower legs outdoors

Stray cats and wildlife sleeping under decks, porches and sheds leave flea eggs in the soil. Your pets pick them up and bring them inside. Closing those spaces stops the cycle.

Pets, new pets and previous tenants

  • A new puppy, kitten or rescue
  • Moved into a home that had pets
  • A pet that missed its flea treatment

Most flea problems start with a pet. Even an indoor cat can get fleas from a visit to the groomer, a dog in the hallway, or a few fleas carried in on clothing.

How our emergency flea treatment works

1

Inspect and confirm

We confirm it's fleas, find where activity is heaviest, and check for a wildlife or outdoor source so it doesn't keep coming back.

2

Treat the hiding spots

A licensed technician treats carpets, rugs, floor cracks, under furniture and pet resting areas, using products that target adults and stop eggs and larvae from developing.

3

Outside if needed

Shaded areas where pets rest, under decks and along the foundation can be treated too if fleas are coming in from the yard.

4

Follow-up visit

New fleas keep hatching from protected pupae for a couple of weeks. A follow-up treatment catches them before they can lay eggs.

If wildlife is the source, we also handle the animals and the openings. See wildlife removal.

How to get ready for flea treatment

🧹

Vacuum first

Vacuum all floors, rugs and furniture right before we arrive. It pulls eggs out and wakes pupae up so the treatment reaches them.

🧺

Clear the floors

Pick up toys, shoes, clothes and anything stored under beds so we can treat the floor underneath.

🐾

Plan for pets

Pets should be treated by your vet the same day and kept out of the home until treated areas are dry. We'll tell you how long.

πŸšͺ

Plan to step out

People and pets should leave during treatment and stay out until it's dry, usually a few hours.

How long it takes to get rid of fleas

WhenWhat to expect
Treatment dayFleas are treated in carpets, floors, furniture and pet areas.
Days 1 to 14You may still see some fleas. This is normal: new adults are hatching from pupae and will die after contacting treated areas. Keep vacuuming every day.
About 2 weeksFollow-up visit to catch the last fleas before they lay new eggs.
3 to 4 weeksMost homes are flea-free, as long as pets stay on vet-recommended treatment.
After thatIf fleas return, look for an untreated pet or animals living in or under the house.

Don't shampoo or steam clean the carpets for about two weeks after treatment unless we tell you to. It can remove the treatment before the pupae hatch.

We treat fleas in Englewood, Teaneck, Hackensack, Paramus, Fair Lawn and the rest of Bergen County, in single-family homes, condos and apartment buildings. Emergency Flea Treatment Questions

How fast can I get emergency flea treatment?

Same-day appointments are often available, especially in Garfield and the towns around it. Call or text 973-510-2585 with a photo and how many rooms are affected, and we'll give you the earliest time. Until we arrive, vacuum thoroughly, wash pet bedding hot, and call your vet so your pets can be treated the same day as the house.

What kills fleas in the house fast?

A professional treatment of carpets, floors, furniture and pet resting areas, combined with daily vacuuming and vet-recommended treatment for every pet, kills fleas in the house fastest. Store foggers don't reach under furniture or deep into carpet, so they usually miss the eggs and larvae. Expect to see a few fleas for up to two weeks while pupae hatch.

How long does it take to get rid of fleas?

Most homes are flea-free in about three to four weeks with a treatment, a follow-up visit around two weeks later, and pets on vet-recommended flea treatment. You may still see some fleas in the first two weeks because protected pupae keep hatching. That's normal, and those new fleas die after contacting the treated areas.

Why do I have fleas but no pets?

If you have fleas but no pets, the usual source is wildlife, like raccoons, squirrels or stray cats, living in the attic, crawl space or under the porch. Fleas can also be left behind by a previous owner's or tenant's pets and wake up months later. We look for the source as part of the inspection so the fleas don't come back.

Can I stay home during flea treatment?

No, people and pets should leave during flea treatment and stay out until treated areas are dry, which is usually a few hours. We'll tell you exactly how long before you can come back. Keep pets off treated carpets until dry, and remove fish tanks or cover them and turn off the pump, as we'll explain when we book.

Is flea treatment safe for kids and pets?

Yes, when applied by a licensed applicator following the label and once treated areas are dry. Keep children and pets out until then. Pets themselves should be treated with a product your veterinarian recommends, not with household sprays. Tell us about babies, pregnancies, birds, fish or reptiles in the home so we can plan around them.

Do I need to treat my yard for fleas?

You need to treat the yard for fleas only if pets keep picking them up outside, or animals are living under the deck, porch or shed. Fleas survive in shady, moist spots, not in sunny lawns. We check the yard during the inspection and treat the shaded areas where pets rest if they're part of the problem.

Should I use a flea bomb before calling an exterminator?

No, a flea bomb is usually a waste of time and money. Foggers settle on open surfaces and don't reach under furniture, deep into carpet or into floor cracks where eggs and larvae hide, and they leave residue throughout the house. Vacuum and wash bedding instead, then call for a professional treatment.
