Squirrel Removal Cost: What You're Paying For and Why It Varies

Scratching above the bedroom ceiling at sunrise, a chewed hole in the soffit, or a squirrel running along the gutter and disappearing into the roof? Here's what squirrel removal costs depend on β€” and the one shortcut that almost always ends up costing more.

How much does squirrel removal cost?

Squirrel removal cost depends on how many entry holes the squirrels are using, how high and steep the roof is, whether babies are in the attic, and how much sealing, repair and attic cleanup the house needs afterward. Most of the price is in exclusion and repair, not the removal itself, because a squirrel job isn't finished until every opening is closed. We inspect and give a free quote; call or text 973-510-2585.

What affects squirrel removal cost

Squirrel jobs are priced on the house, not the squirrel. These are the factors that move the number:

FactorSmaller jobBigger job
Entry pointsOne hole at a roof return or ventSeveral holes, or weak spots all around the roofline
Roof height and pitchRanch or low roof, reachable by ladderThree-story or steep roof that needs extra setup and safety gear
BabiesNo young in the atticA nest with young that must be handled first
Where they areAttic onlyAttic plus wall voids, soffits or a chimney
DamageSmall gnawed gapChewed fascia, soffit, siding, vents or wiring
Attic conditionLittle nesting and droppingsSoiled or packed-down insulation, strong odor
Prevention extrasNoneGutter guards, vent covers, chimney cap, trimming access

That's why a phone price without an inspection is usually a guess. Our quote is free and based on what we actually see on your roof.

The three parts of a squirrel job

A proper squirrel job has three pieces. Comparing quotes is much easier once you know which ones are included:

Educational graphic: squirrel exclusion starts with an inspection
Part 1

Inspection and removal

  • Find the main hole and any backup holes
  • Check for young before anything is sealed
  • One-way exit device or trapping, depending on the house

Squirrels usually use one main entrance but know several. We find them all, confirm whether there's a nest, and choose the removal method that fits the house and the season.

Part 2

Exclusion and sealing

  • Close every hole with chew-resistant material
  • Reinforce roof returns, vents and gable corners
  • Make it last β€” squirrels test repairs

This is most of the cost and most of the value. Squirrels can chew through wood, vinyl, plastic vents and soft metal, so sealing has to use materials they can't easily get through.

Part 3

Repair and cleanup

  • Replace chewed fascia and soffit boards
  • Remove nesting and droppings
  • Deodorize; remove and replace insulation if needed

Not every house needs this. If squirrels lived there a while, the attic usually does. We handle odor control, HEPA cleanup and attic insulation removal and replacement ourselves.

Baby season changes the timing and the price

Gray squirrels in New Jersey typically have young twice a year β€” one litter in late winter to early spring and another in late summer. Mothers often choose a warm, quiet attic for the nest.

  • Never seal a hole with babies inside. The mother will chew a new hole, often bigger, and the young can die in the attic β€” which means an odor problem and more cost.
  • Young can't leave through a one-way door until they're old enough to move on their own. If they're present, removal has to account for them first.
  • Timing can add a visit. A job with young may need extra trips to make sure the whole family is out before final sealing.

If you hear high-pitched chirping or squeaking in the attic in spring or late summer, mention it when you call. Learn more on our baby squirrel and raccoon season page.

How we price a squirrel removal job

1

Roof and attic inspection

We walk the roofline and, where we can, the attic, looking for holes, chew marks, droppings, nesting and signs of young.

2

Count and measure every opening

Main holes, backup holes and weak spots that will become the next hole β€” roof returns, gable vents, ridge vents and soffit gaps.

3

Choose the removal method

One-way exit device or trapping, depending on the house, the number of squirrels and whether babies are present.

4

List the repairs

Chewed wood, vents and trim, plus any attic cleanup or insulation work, so nothing is a surprise later.

5

Give a written, free quote

Squirrel damage repair and attic cleanup costs

The part of a squirrel bill that grows the most is the part people don't see: what happened in the attic while the squirrels lived there.

  • Chewed roofline wood. Fascia boards, soffits and roof returns are the most common squirrel entry points. Repair cost depends on how many and how high.
  • Vents. Plastic gable, roof and dryer vents are easy for squirrels to chew. Replacing or covering them with sturdier material is often part of the job.
  • Wiring. Squirrels gnaw on wires. If you see chewed insulation on wiring, have an electrician check it β€” it can be a fire risk.
  • Insulation. Nesting, urine and droppings flatten and soil insulation. Small areas can be cleaned and deodorized; heavy contamination may mean removal and replacement, which we do ourselves.
  • Odor. Urine, droppings or a squirrel that died in a wall can leave a strong smell. We do wildlife odor control and HEPA cleanup.

Why the cheapest fix usually costs more

πŸ”¨

Sealing the hole yourself

If a squirrel or a nest is still inside, it chews right back out β€” or a new hole appears next to the patch.

🧴

Repellents and mothballs

Smells and sprays rarely move a squirrel that has already nested. Mothballs in an attic are outside the product label and fill the house with fumes.

πŸͺ€

Trapping without sealing

Remove one squirrel and the holes stay open. Another squirrel moves in, sometimes within days.

🎯

Patching only the main hole

Squirrels know their backup holes. If the weak spots stay open, they come back through those.

The value is in closing the house for good. Compare home remedies with full removal, exclusion and repair.

Does homeowners insurance cover squirrel damage?

It depends on your policy, and the answer is often "partly or not at all." Many policies exclude damage from rodents and squirrels, treating it as a maintenance issue. Some may cover a sudden, related loss β€” for example, if chewed wiring causes a fire or a leak β€” but that's between you and your insurer.

What helps if you do make a claim:

  • Photos of the holes, chewed wood and attic condition before work starts.
  • A written description of what was found and what was repaired.
  • Dates β€” when you first heard noises and when work was done.

We can photograph what we find during the inspection so you have a record. Always check your own policy and talk to your agent before assuming coverage either way.

Squirrel Removal Cost Questions

How much does it cost to get squirrels out of the attic?

It depends on how many holes they use, how high the roof is, whether there are babies, and how much sealing, repair and cleanup the house needs. Removal is usually the smaller part; exclusion and repair make up most of the cost. We inspect and give a free, written quote.

Why is squirrel exclusion more expensive than trapping?

Because exclusion is what actually solves the problem. Trapping removes animals but leaves the holes open for the next squirrel. Exclusion means finding and sealing every opening with chew-resistant material, which takes more time, ladders and materials, but stops repeat visits.

How long does squirrel removal take?

The first visit usually handles the inspection and starts removal. Squirrels typically leave through a one-way device within a few days, then we confirm the attic is clear and finish sealing. Jobs with babies or many entry points can take longer.

Is it cheaper to remove squirrels myself?

It can look cheaper, but DIY often costs more over time. Sealing a hole with a squirrel or babies still inside leads to new holes and odors, and repellents rarely work. Working on a roof is also dangerous. A professional job closes the house once.

Does the price include fixing the damage?

Only if the quote says so, so always ask. Our quotes list removal, sealing and any repairs to chewed wood, vents, soffits or fascia, plus attic cleanup or insulation work if it's needed, so you see the whole job up front.

Why do squirrels keep coming back after I patched the hole?

Usually because there were other holes, the patch used a material squirrels can chew, or a squirrel was still inside. Squirrels test weak spots constantly. Sealing every opening with sturdy material after the attic is clear is what stops them.

Will squirrels in the attic damage wiring?

They can. Squirrels gnaw to keep their teeth worn down, and wires are a common target. If you see chewed wire insulation in the attic, have a licensed electrician check it, since damaged wiring can be a fire hazard.

When is the best time to remove squirrels?

As soon as you know they're there, but the method depends on the season. In late winter to spring and late summer, babies may be present and must be handled before sealing. Calling early keeps the job smaller and avoids damage spreading.

Are you licensed for squirrel removal in NJ?

Yes. Silver Bullet Pest Control is licensed by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife for wildlife work, holds NJ License 90568B and has over 15 years of experience. We're based in Garfield and serve Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties.

Do you clean the attic after squirrels?
