Why Do Roaches Keep Coming Back? Real Causes and How to Stop Them

You sprayed, you set out traps, the kitchen looked clear for a few weeks, and now they're back. That pattern has a cause, and it's almost never bad luck. This guide explains the real reasons roaches return and what actually breaks the cycle, from a licensed North Jersey roach exterminator.

Why do roaches keep coming back?

Roaches keep coming back because the treatment killed the roaches you could see but not the hidden egg cases, the breeding spots inside walls and cabinets, or the source next door. German roach eggs hatch weeks after a spray wears off, sprays push survivors deeper, and leaks, crumbs and cardboard keep feeding them. Lasting control means gel bait and an insect growth regulator in the exact hiding spots, a follow-up visit, and fixing what attracts them.

7 reasons roaches keep coming back

When we get called to a home where roaches "came back," it's usually one or more of these:

πŸ₯š

The eggs survived

A German roach egg case is a hard capsule that protects the eggs from most sprays. Kill the adults and the eggs still hatch two to four weeks later.

🧱

They live where you didn't treat

Roaches spend most of their time inside hinges, wall voids, motor housings and gaps behind the stove. Spraying the floor and counters never reaches them.

πŸ’¨

Spray scattered them

Repellent sprays and foggers drive roaches into new rooms and deeper into walls. It looks like they left. They just moved.

🏒

The source is next door

In apartments and two-family homes, roaches travel through shared walls, pipes and the basement. Your unit gets re-stocked from the one beside it.

πŸ’§

Water is still there

A slow drip under the sink, a sweating pipe or a wet sponge can keep roaches alive even in a spotless kitchen.

πŸ“¦

They keep getting carried in

Cardboard boxes, grocery bags, used appliances and furniture bring new roaches into a home that was already treated.

πŸ”

No follow-up

One treatment rarely finishes a German roach problem. Without a check-back, the few survivors restart the colony.

Most homes have two or three of these at once, plus easy food like crumbs and pet bowls left out. If your kitchen is clean and you still see them, read why roaches show up in a clean house.

The egg timeline: why roaches come back weeks after spraying

This is the number one reason people think a treatment failed. Here's roughly what happens with German cockroaches, the small brown kind that lives in kitchens:

WhenWhat's happeningWhat you notice
Day 1You spray. Adults that walk through it die over the next day or two.Dead roaches on the floor. It looks like it worked.
Week 1Females carrying egg cases hide. Many store sprays have already lost much of their strength.Very few roaches. You think the problem is solved.
Weeks 2–4Egg cases hatch. Each one can release a few dozen tiny nymphs.Small roaches around the sink and stove.
Weeks 6–10The nymphs grow into adults and start making their own egg cases. The problem looks bigger than before you sprayed.
After thatA new generation every couple of months, faster in warm kitchens.Roaches in daylight, droppings in cabinets and drawers.

Timing varies with temperature, but a plan that only kills adults loses to the eggs. That's why professional roach control uses an insect growth regulator (IGR), which stops young roaches from becoming breeding adults, and a follow-up visit timed to catch the next hatch.

Why sprays, foggers and traps make roaches come back

Store products aren't useless, but the way most people use them sets up the next wave. These are the mistakes we see most often in North Jersey kitchens:

  • Bug bombs and foggers. The mist settles on open surfaces, not inside the cracks where roaches live. It also chases them into other rooms and into neighboring apartments, then they come back when it wears off.
  • Spraying on top of bait. Spray contaminates bait and makes roaches avoid it. If you or a past company placed gel bait, spraying the same cracks undoes it.
  • Using one bait for years. Some German roach populations learn to avoid certain baits. Professionals rotate products and placements instead of using the same tube forever.
  • Stopping too early. Seeing no roaches for a week doesn't mean the eggs are gone. Most people stop right before the hatch.

For a side-by-side look at the two main approaches, see gel bait vs. spray for roaches. And if you've been tempted by powders, our guide to boric acid for roaches explains where it helps and where it doesn't.

Which roach keeps coming back? It changes the answer

German cockroach on a kitchen surface
German cockroach

Small brown roaches in the kitchen

  • About half an inch, light brown, two dark stripes behind the head
  • Kitchens, bathrooms, behind appliances
  • Breeds indoors, all year

These come back because they breed inside your home. The fix is inside too: bait, IGR and follow-up in the exact cracks they use.

Large dark oriental cockroach
Oriental / water bug

Big dark roaches in the basement

  • Shiny black or dark brown, slow moving
  • Basements, floor drains, laundry rooms
  • Worse after heavy rain

These come back because they live in drains, crawl spaces and soil outside. The fix is sealing entry points and treating drains and the foundation edge.

Clean modern kitchen with cabinets
Seasonal visitors

Roaches only in summer or near doors

  • Larger reddish-brown or small fast outdoor roaches
  • Near doors, garages and patios
  • Mostly warm months

These come back because they wander in from outside. Door sweeps, sealed gaps and a perimeter treatment keep them out.

Roaches keep coming back in an apartment? Look at the building

A lot of North Jersey renters live in older brick buildings, garden apartments and two- and three-family houses. In those buildings, German roaches don't respect property lines. They move through the gaps around plumbing, the space behind kitchen cabinets that back up to the next unit, trash chutes, shared basements and laundry rooms.

  • Tenants: report roaches to your landlord or super in writing, with dates and photos. Ask whether neighboring units are being treated at the same time. Don't fog β€” it pushes roaches next door and right back.
  • Owners and managers: treat the affected unit plus its neighbors, then the trash room, basement and any shared kitchen. Scheduled service for the whole building is usually cheaper over a year than chasing complaints one unit at a time.

Who is responsible for pest control depends on the lease, the type of building and local code, and rules can change. Our landlord and tenant pest control guide covers the basics in general terms; for your exact situation, check with your town's code enforcement office or the NJ Department of Community Affairs. Owners can also see our apartment building pest control programs.

How to stop roaches from coming back: what you can do today

1

Stop spraying

Put away sprays and foggers. They scatter roaches and spoil bait. Sticky traps are fine β€” place a few under the sink and behind the fridge to track activity.

2

Take away water

Fix drips under sinks and around the dishwasher. Dry the sink and tub at night. Don't leave wet sponges or dish rags on the counter.

3

Take away food

Wash dishes before bed, store dry food in sealed containers, clean under the toaster and microwave, and pick up pet bowls overnight.

4

Get rid of cardboard and clutter

Roaches love the glue and layers in cardboard. Recycle boxes and paper bags right away and clear out the cabinet under the sink.

5

Seal the easy gaps

Caulk gaps around pipes under sinks, along backsplashes and where cabinets meet the wall. Use drain covers in the basement.

These steps help, but on their own they rarely wipe out a breeding German roach colony. More habits: how to prevent cockroaches.

How a professional treatment keeps roaches from coming back

The difference between a treatment that lasts and one that doesn't is mostly where the product goes and what happens after. Here's how Silver Bullet Pest Control approaches a roach problem that keeps returning:

  1. Find the harborage. A licensed technician checks hinges, the gaps behind and under appliances, the sink cabinet, the dishwasher, electronics, bathroom vanities and any spot that's warm and close to water.
  2. Gel bait in the cracks. Small placements of gel bait go exactly where roaches travel. Roaches eat it and carry it back to the harborage, so it reaches roaches you never see.
  3. Insect growth regulator. The IGR keeps nymphs from maturing into breeding adults. This is what deals with the egg problem.
  4. A follow-up visit. We come back to check activity, add bait where it was eaten and treat any new spots, timed to catch roaches that hatched after the first visit.
  5. A list of what to fix. Leaks, gaps, cardboard and food habits that will keep feeding roaches if they stay.

Questions About Roaches Coming Back

Why do I still see roaches after the exterminator came?

Seeing some roaches for a week or two after treatment is normal. Bait takes time to work, and roaches often come out more while they're affected. Egg cases also hatch after the first visit, which is why a follow-up visit is part of the plan. If numbers aren't dropping after a couple of weeks, call so the technician can check placements and look for a source you missed.

How long does it take to stop roaches from coming back?

Most homes see a big drop within two to three weeks of a proper bait and IGR treatment, and lighter problems can clear faster. Heavy German roach infestations, or apartments where neighbors are also infested, usually need at least one follow-up and sometimes more. Fixing leaks and food sources at the same time shortens the timeline noticeably.

Why do roaches come back after a bug bomb?

Foggers only coat open surfaces, so roaches hiding inside walls, hinges and appliances survive. The fog also drives them to other rooms or next door, and they return once it wears off. Egg cases aren't affected at all. That's why many people see more roaches a month after bombing than before. Crack-and-crevice bait treatment works far better.

Can roaches come back from a neighbor's apartment?

Yes. In apartments and multi-family houses, German roaches move between units through shared walls, plumbing gaps and basements. If only your unit is treated, roaches from next door can re-infest it within weeks. The best results come when the landlord treats the affected unit and the units around it at the same time, plus shared areas.

Do roaches come back in the winter?

German roaches don't really have a season in New Jersey because they live indoors where it's warm all year. Heated kitchens and boiler rooms keep them breeding through winter. Larger outdoor roaches and water bugs are a different story: they show up more in warm, wet months and after heavy rain, and less in winter.

Will roaches come back if my house is clean?

They can. Cleaning removes food, but roaches also need water and shelter, and a dripping pipe or a warm gap behind the stove is enough. Roaches can also be carried in on boxes or travel from neighbors. A clean house makes treatment work much better and faster, but it doesn't prevent every infestation on its own.

Is it safe to have roach treatment with kids and pets?

Gel bait is placed in tiny amounts inside cracks and hinges rather than sprayed across rooms, which keeps it away from where kids and pets touch. Tell your technician about children, pets, pregnancy or health concerns before the visit so the plan can be adjusted. Follow the instructions you're given after the treatment.

Is there a warranty if roaches come back?

Yes. Silver Bullet Pest Control's roach treatment carries a 90-day warranty. If roaches come back during that time, call us and we'll handle it. Homes and buildings on recurring service also get a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Ask for the details when you get your free quote.
