Roaches in Kitchen Cabinets: Why They're There and How to Get Rid of Them

Opened the cabinet and saw something run behind the cereal box? Roaches in kitchen cabinets are one of the most common calls we get in North Jersey, and they're also one of the most fixable. Here's why cabinets attract them, what to do with your food and dishes, and how to clear them out without spraying chemicals where you eat.

How do you get rid of roaches in kitchen cabinets?

To get rid of roaches in kitchen cabinets, empty the cabinets, throw out opened food they could reach, vacuum the corners and hinges, then treat the cracks, hinges and gaps behind the cabinets with gel bait and an insect growth regulator rather than spraying the shelves. Fix leaks under the sink and seal food in hard containers. A follow-up visit catches roaches that hatch from hidden egg cases.

Why roaches love kitchen cabinets

A kitchen cabinet gives a German cockroach almost everything it needs in one place: food crumbs, warmth, darkness and tight cracks to hide in. Roaches like to press their bodies against surfaces above and below them, so the gap behind a hinge, the seam where a shelf meets the side panel, or the hollow space behind the cabinet back is perfect.

  • Under the sink is the top spot. Pipes bring water, the gaps where pipes go through the wall lead into the wall void, and the cabinet floor is often damp.
  • Next to the stove, dishwasher and fridge, motors and heat make cabinets warmer than the rest of the kitchen.
  • Upper cabinets near the microwave or range hood stay warm and collect grease.
  • Pantry cabinets hold cereal, pasta, flour, rice and pet food, often in thin bags and cardboard boxes roaches chew through.

Older kitchens with wood cabinets, gaps around pipes and worn caulk give roaches more places to hide. That's common in the older two-family homes and apartment buildings across Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties, but we see roaches in brand-new kitchens too, usually carried in on boxes.

Signs of roaches inside your cabinets

You may never see a roach in daylight. Check for these with a flashlight:

⚫

Black specks

Droppings that look like ground pepper or coffee grounds, collected in corners, along hinges and on the top edge of doors.

🟀

Brown smears

Dark streaks where cabinet panels meet, especially in damp cabinets under the sink.

πŸ₯š

Egg cases

Small tan or brown capsules, about the size of a grain of rice, tucked into corners and cracks.

πŸ¦—

Shed skins

Light brown, empty roach-shaped skins left behind as young roaches grow.

πŸ“¦

Chewed packaging

Holes or nibbled corners in cereal boxes, paper bags of flour and pet food bags.

πŸ‘ƒ

Musty, oily smell

A stale smell when you open the cabinet usually means a large population nearby.

Seeing roaches when you open a cabinet during the day is a sign of a heavy problem: they're running out of hiding space. Roaches in a spotless kitchen? See why roaches show up in a clean house.

Which roach is in your cabinets?

Almost every cabinet infestation is German cockroaches. Other roaches show up in kitchens but usually don't move into the cabinets:

What to do with food and dishes in an infested cabinet

Roaches walk through drains and garbage, then over your food, and they leave droppings and saliva behind. You don't need to throw out your whole kitchen, but be sensible:

  • Throw out any opened food in bags, paper or thin cardboard that roaches could reach: cereal, crackers, flour, sugar, rice, chips, pet food. Toss anything with droppings, holes or a strange smell.
  • Keep unopened cans, glass jars and food in sealed hard plastic containers. Wipe the outside before putting them back.
  • Wash dishes, pots, cutting boards and utensils that were stored in the cabinet in hot, soapy water or the dishwasher.
  • Move forward with hard, airtight containers for dry goods. Roaches can't chew through them, and you can see at a glance if something got in.
  • Skip the shelf liner for now. Roaches hide and lay eggs under contact paper and loose liners. Bare, clean shelves are easier to check.

Don't spray inside food cabinets. Household bug spray on shelves where you store food and dishes is not a good idea, and it scatters roaches deeper into the walls. The goal is to treat the cracks they hide in, not the shelves you use.

How to clean roaches out of kitchen cabinets

1

Empty one section at a time

Take everything out of the cabinets in the affected area, including under the sink. Set aside food to toss, dishes to wash and items to keep.

2

Vacuum, don't just wipe

Use a crevice tool on corners, hinges, shelf pin holes and the gap along the back. Vacuuming pulls out droppings, egg cases and live roaches. Empty the vacuum outside right away.

3

Wash with soap and water

Wipe shelves and doors with warm soapy water to remove droppings and the scent trails roaches follow. Let everything dry fully.

4

Fix the water

Look for drips at the sink trap, dishwasher line and faucet. A damp cabinet floor will keep roaches coming back.

5

Seal the obvious gaps

Caulk gaps where pipes go through the cabinet back and where the countertop meets the wall. Leave hinge areas for treatment.

6

Put back only what's sealed

Return food in hard containers and clean dishes. Recycle all cardboard instead of storing it.

Cleaning removes a lot of roaches and makes treatment work faster. It won't reach the ones living behind the cabinets and inside the walls, which is where most of the colony usually is. Read why roaches keep coming back to see why.

How a professional treats roaches in kitchen cabinets

Our approach keeps products out of the places where you store food and put the bait where roaches actually live.

Crack between cabinet and wall where roaches hide
Step 1

Find where they live

  • Hinges and door corners
  • Gaps behind and under cabinets
  • Pipe openings under the sink

A licensed technician checks every cabinet with a flashlight, along with the stove, fridge, dishwasher and microwave, and maps where roaches are hiding and breeding.

Step 2

Gel bait and growth regulator

  • Small bait placements in cracks, not on shelves
  • Insect growth regulator stops young roaches maturing
  • No fogging your kitchen

Roaches eat the bait and carry it back to the hiding spot. The IGR keeps the next generation from breeding. This is our standard roach method.

Step 3

Follow-up visit

  • We check where bait was eaten
  • Re-treat active spots
  • Look for new sources

Egg cases hidden behind cabinets hatch after the first visit, so we come back to finish the job. Roach treatment carries a 90-day warranty.

How to keep roaches out of your kitchen cabinets

πŸ«™

Hard containers

Store dry food, pet food and snacks in airtight hard containers.

🧽

Dry the sink

Wipe the sink at night and don't leave wet sponges or rags in the cabinet below.

🍳

Clean the hot spots

Clean under the toaster, microwave and stove burners. Grease is food for roaches.

πŸ“¦

No cardboard storage

Unpack groceries and deliveries and recycle the boxes the same day.

In an apartment building, cabinets can be re-infested from the unit next door through shared walls. If that sounds like your building, see apartment building pest control. For more habits, read how to prevent cockroaches.

What's bugging you? - Step 1 of 3

Roaches in Kitchen Cabinets: Common Questions

Why do I have roaches in my kitchen cabinets?

Cabinets give roaches food, warmth, darkness and tight cracks to hide in, and the sink cabinet adds water. German roaches usually arrive on grocery boxes, used appliances or from a neighboring unit, then settle in the hinges and gaps behind the cabinets. Once there, they breed quickly, so a few roaches can become a large problem within a couple of months.

Is it safe to spray bug spray inside kitchen cabinets?

It's not a good idea to spray household bug spray on shelves where you keep food and dishes. Spray also tends to push roaches deeper into the wall behind the cabinet, where they keep breeding. A safer and more effective approach is gel bait placed in cracks and hinges, away from food surfaces, combined with an insect growth regulator.

Should I throw away food if roaches were in the cabinet?

Throw away opened food in bags, paper or thin boxes that roaches could reach, and anything with droppings or holes. Unopened cans, glass jars and food in sealed hard containers can be kept after you wipe the outside. Wash dishes and utensils stored in the cabinet before using them again.

Can roaches live inside the cabinet walls?

Yes. The hollow space behind cabinet backs, under the bottom shelf and around pipe openings is where much of a German roach colony often lives. That's why wiping shelves doesn't end an infestation. Professional treatment puts bait into those cracks and openings so roaches carry it back to where they hide.

How long does it take to get rid of roaches in cabinets?

Most kitchens see a big drop within two to three weeks after gel bait and IGR treatment. Heavier infestations, or apartments where roaches come from next door, usually need at least one follow-up visit. Fixing leaks and storing food in hard containers at the same time helps clear them faster.

Do roaches in cabinets mean my kitchen is dirty?

Not necessarily. Roaches also need water and shelter, and a small leak under the sink or a warm gap by the stove is enough. They often arrive in grocery boxes or from neighbors. Cleanliness helps treatment work, but even very clean kitchens can get roaches.

Should I replace my kitchen cabinets because of roaches?

Almost never. Roaches can be removed from cabinets with cleaning and targeted treatment. Replacing cabinets without treating the walls and neighboring areas can actually move the problem. If cabinets are rotted from a long-term leak, fix the leak and the damaged wood, but treat the roaches first.

Is there a warranty on roach treatment?

Yes. Silver Bullet Pest Control's roach treatment carries a 90-day warranty. If roaches come back in your cabinets during that time, call us. Homes and buildings on recurring service also get a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
