Oriental Cockroach & Water Bug Control in NJ Basements

Shiny black bugs about an inch long in the basement, the laundry room or stuck in the bathtub? In North Jersey those "water bugs" are usually oriental cockroaches. They live where it's cool and damp, come in from drains, crawl spaces and the soil around the foundation, and show up most in spring and early summer. Silver Bullet Pest Control treats them where they live and helps you dry out what draws them.

How do you get rid of oriental cockroaches (water bugs)?

Oriental cockroach control means treating the cool, damp places they breed, such as floor drains, crawl spaces, basement walls and the soil and mulch along the foundation, and then fixing the moisture and gaps that let them in. Silver Bullet Pest Control places gel bait and an insect growth regulator where they hide, treats the entry areas, shows you what to seal and comes back for a follow-up. Roach treatment carries a 90-day warranty. Call or text 973-510-2585.

Are water bugs cockroaches?

Usually, yes. In New Jersey, "water bug" is a nickname, not a species. When people call us about water bugs in the basement or bathroom, it's almost always one of two roaches:

  • Oriental cockroaches: shiny, very dark brown to black, about an inch long, slow, and found low in the house near damp spots. This page is about them.
  • American cockroaches: bigger, reddish brown and able to fly short distances. See our American cockroach control page.

True water bugs are a different insect altogether. They live in ponds and streams, hunt other insects in the water and sometimes fly to porch lights at night. They don't breed in houses. If the bug you found was in the basement, a drain or the tub, it's almost certainly a roach and it can be treated as one.

How to identify an oriental cockroach

Male and female oriental roaches look different, which confuses a lot of people into thinking they have two kinds of bug:

Oriental roaches climb poorly, which is why people find them stuck in tubs and sinks: they fell in and can't get back out. It doesn't always mean they came up the drain.

When oriental cockroaches show up in New Jersey

Oriental roaches like cooler temperatures than other roaches, and their activity follows the seasons:

SeasonWhat they're doingWhat you'll notice
SpringAdults become active as the ground warms and wet weather sets inFirst sightings in the basement, garage and around doors
Late spring to early summerPeak adult numbersThe most calls we get; roaches in tubs, drains and laundry rooms
Mid to late summerHot, dry weather drives them toward moistureThey move indoors toward basements, drains and AC drip lines
Fall and winterSlower; young roaches develop in protected damp spotsFewer sightings, but they're still in crawl spaces and drains

Their life cycle is slow, so a population that was ignored last year often comes back stronger the next spring. Treating early in the season helps.

Where oriental cockroaches hide around a North Jersey home

They need moisture more than food. In our area we find them in these three zones again and again:

Shiny black oriental cockroach
Inside

Basements, drains and laundry rooms

  • Around floor drains and sump pits
  • Under washers, utility sinks and water heaters
  • Behind stored boxes on damp floors

Older North Jersey homes often have block or stone foundation walls and damp basements. That's prime oriental roach territory, especially near floor drains and wherever water collects.

Cracks and gaps in a wall
Entry points

Foundation cracks, door gaps and pipes

  • Cracks and gaps along the foundation
  • Worn sweeps on basement and garage doors
  • Openings around pipes and dryer vents

Oriental roaches walk in at ground level. They come through gaps at the base of doors, cracks in the foundation and openings where pipes and wires enter the house.

Outside

Mulch, leaf litter and crawl spaces

  • Thick mulch against the foundation
  • Leaf piles, woodpiles and stones near the house
  • Damp crawl spaces and under porches

Many oriental roaches live outside in damp spots right next to the house and move indoors when it gets too dry or too wet. Treating only the inside misses where many of them are breeding.

How we get rid of oriental cockroaches

1

Inspect low and damp

A licensed technician checks the basement, drains, sump pit, crawl space, laundry and utility areas, door thresholds and the outside of the foundation, including mulch beds and window wells.

2

Treat where they breed

Gel bait and an insect growth regulator go into the cracks, voids and damp areas where they hide inside. We also treat entry areas and the places outside where they're living.

3

Close the way in

We point out the door gaps, foundation cracks, pipe openings and drain issues to seal or repair, and we explain which ones you can handle yourself.

4

Follow up

A follow-up visit checks activity and catches young roaches that hatched after the first treatment. Roach treatment carries a 90-day warranty.

Fixing the moisture that draws water bugs

Oriental roaches go where it's damp. Drying out the areas around and under your home is the best long-term prevention:

  • Pull mulch back. Keep thick mulch, leaf litter and stone beds a few inches away from the foundation wall.
  • Move water away. Clean the gutters and make sure downspouts carry water away from the house, not into the soil beside the basement wall.
  • Watch window wells. Clear leaves and standing water out of basement window wells, where roaches gather.
  • Dry the basement. Run a dehumidifier, fix leaky pipes and water heater drips, and don't leave wet laundry or mops sitting.
  • Ventilate crawl spaces. A damp, closed-in crawl space under a porch or addition can breed roaches all year.
  • Seal ground-level gaps. Replace worn door sweeps on basement and garage doors and seal foundation cracks and pipe openings.
  • Keep drain traps full. Run water in unused floor drains, sinks and showers every week or two, and use tight drain covers.

These steps also help keep out mice, ants and other pests that like the same damp spots.

Water bug fixes that help, and ones that don't

βœ…

Helps: drying things out

Dehumidifiers, fixed leaks and better drainage make your basement much less attractive. This does more than any spray.

βœ…

Helps: sealing low gaps

Door sweeps, sealed foundation cracks and tight drain covers block the routes oriental roaches use.

❌

Doesn't help much: bug bombs

Foggers fill the air of a room but don't reach the cracks, drains and outdoor areas where these roaches breed.

❌

Doesn't help much: bleach down the drain

It may kill a roach in the trap, but the population lives in the damp areas around the house and below, not in the sink.

Still seeing them after you've dried things out? That usually means a breeding area you can't reach, such as a crawl space, wall void or the soil along the foundation. That's when a professional treatment pays off.

Oriental Cockroach & Water Bug Questions

What's the difference between a water bug and a cockroach?

In New Jersey homes, what people call a water bug is usually a cockroach, most often an oriental cockroach or an American cockroach. True water bugs are aquatic insects that live in ponds and streams and don't breed in houses. If it's dark, about an inch long and found near a drain or in the basement, treat it as a roach.

Why do I find water bugs in my bathtub?

Oriental cockroaches are poor climbers on smooth surfaces. They wander into the tub or sink looking for water, slip in and can't climb back out. Sometimes they do come from the drain, especially if the trap is dry, but often they came from a nearby wall gap or the basement. Keeping traps full and sealing pipe gaps helps.

Are oriental cockroaches harmful?

They don't bite people in normal situations, but they live in drains, soil and damp areas and can carry bacteria onto surfaces. Heavy infestations give off a strong musty smell, and roach droppings and shed skins can trigger allergies or asthma in some people. They're worth treating, especially in homes with children or anyone with breathing problems.

Why do water bugs come out in spring?

Oriental cockroaches like cooler weather than other roaches, and adults become active as the ground warms and spring rain soaks the soil. Their numbers usually peak in late spring and early summer. That's when most homeowners first notice them in basements, garages and laundry rooms. Treating early in the season keeps them from building up.

Can oriental cockroaches fly?

No. Males have wings that cover most of their back and females have only short wing pads, but neither can fly. If a big roach flew at you, it was probably an American cockroach. Oriental roaches walk in at ground level through door gaps, foundation cracks, pipe openings and drains.

Will a dehumidifier get rid of water bugs?

A dehumidifier helps a lot, but on its own it usually won't eliminate an established population. Oriental roaches need moisture, so drying the basement makes it much less attractive and helps prevent them. Combine it with sealed gaps, full drain traps, mulch pulled back from the foundation and a professional treatment of the breeding areas for the best result.

How long does it take to get rid of oriental cockroaches?

Most homes see a clear drop within a few weeks after the drains, basement and outside breeding areas are treated and the moisture problems are fixed. Their slow life cycle means young roaches can keep appearing for a while, which is why a follow-up visit is part of our method. Roach treatment carries a 90-day warranty.

Is the treatment safe for kids and pets?

Yes. Gel bait and the growth regulator go into cracks, voids and drain areas that kids and pets can't reach, and we don't fog living spaces. Outside treatments are placed where they're needed, not sprayed everywhere. Tell us about pets, babies or health concerns before the visit and we'll plan around them.

Do I need to treat outside too?

Often, yes. Many oriental cockroaches live in mulch, leaf litter, crawl spaces and soil along the foundation, then move inside when it's too wet or too dry. Treating only the basement can leave the main breeding area untouched. Our inspection covers the outside of the foundation so we can treat both where it's needed.

Where do you treat oriental cockroaches?

We're based in Garfield and serve Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties, including Garfield, Lodi, Wallington, Clifton, Nutley, Hawthorne and Haledon. We also serve Morris and Union county towns with visits scheduled ahead. Same-day service is often available in our core area.
