Dryer Vent Mesh Cover: Keep Critters Out Without Starting a Lint Fire

Birds, mice and even squirrels see your dryer vent as a warm, cozy, slightly linty apartment. The instinct is to slap a mesh screen over it. Please don’t — here’s why, and what to do instead.

Quick answer: Don’t put plain mesh or window screen over a dryer vent. Lint clogs it, the dryer overheats, and that’s a fire risk — building codes don’t allow screens on dryer exhaust outlets. Use a dryer vent cover with a working damper (flap) that’s designed to keep pests out and easy to clean, and clean it regularly.

Why animals love dryer vents

  • Warm air in winter.
  • Soft lint for nests.
  • Broken or stuck-open flaps make a perfect front door.
  • A gap around the vent hood can lead right into the wall.

The safe way to pest-proof a dryer vent

  1. Fix the flap. The damper should open when the dryer runs and close tight when it stops. Stuck-open flaps are the #1 problem.
  2. Use a pest-proof dryer vent cover made for dryer exhaust — with a damper or guard designed to let lint through.
  3. Seal around the vent hood where it meets the siding, so nothing gets into the wall beside it.
  4. Clean the vent and duct at least once a year (more if you run the dryer a lot).
  5. Check it after storms and in fall, when animals look for winter homes.
Signs of a problem: clothes taking longer to dry, a hot laundry room, a burning smell, bird chirping or scratching near the dryer. Stop using the dryer and get the vent checked.

We install pest-proof vent guards as part of our rodent exclusion and wildlife exclusion work — dryer, bathroom and kitchen vents included.

Common questions

Can I put mesh over my dryer vent?

No. Lint clogs mesh and screens, which can cause the dryer to overheat — a fire risk. Use a dryer vent cover with a damper designed to keep pests out.

How do I keep birds out of my dryer vent?

Make sure the flap closes tightly, use a pest-proof dryer vent cover made for dryer exhaust, and keep the vent clean.

Can mice get in through a dryer vent?

Yes, through a stuck-open flap or a gap around the vent hood.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

At least once a year, and more often for large families or heavy use.
