Signs you need a carpenter bee exterminator in Wayne

Walk around the house and look for these:

What you seeWhat it means
Round, clean-edged holes about the width of a finger, often on the underside of a boardA female carpenter bee has drilled the entrance to a tunnel
Little piles of coarse sawdust on the deck, patio or windowsill belowFresh drilling β€” the tunnel is active
Yellowish-brown stains or streaks running down from a holeWaste from the bees inside the tunnel
Big black bees hovering near the eaves or in your face in springMales guarding the area β€” they can't sting
Woodpecker holes and torn-up wood around old bee holesBirds digging out the larvae, which makes the damage much worse
The same boards drilled year after yearBees reusing and extending old tunnels

If you're seeing the holes but no bees, the tunnels may be from last year. They can still be reused this spring, so they're worth dealing with.

Why carpenter bees love Wayne homes

Wayne is a big, leafy Passaic County township, with neighborhoods spread out around Packanack Lake, Pines Lake and the wooded land near High Mountain, and plenty of homes with wood siding, cedar trim, decks, porches and pergolas. That's a lot of exactly what carpenter bees are looking for.

Carpenter bees prefer soft, bare or weathered wood β€” pine, cedar, cypress and redwood β€” especially wood that hasn't been painted in a while. On Wayne homes we usually find them in:

  • Fascia boards and the underside of eaves β€” the most common spot, and the hardest to see from the ground.
  • Deck rails, posts and stair stringers, particularly the undersides.
  • Cedar siding and shake, window trim and door frames.
  • Pergolas, gazebos, swing sets, sheds and fences in the backyard.
  • Lake-house docks, boathouses and outdoor furniture near the water.

Painted, sealed wood is much less attractive to them, though they will still drill where paint has worn through. Vinyl and aluminum aren't drilled, but the wood behind a loose piece of trim can be.

A carpenter bee year in Wayne

Knowing their calendar is the key to treating them at the right time:

🌱

April – May

Adults come out of the old tunnels. Males hover and chase anything that comes close. Females drill new tunnels or clean out old ones and lay eggs. This is the best time to treat.

β˜€οΈ

June – July

Eggs hatch inside the tunnels and larvae feed on pollen the female left behind. Woodpeckers may start digging for them.

πŸ‚

August – September

A new generation of adults comes out, feeds on flowers, then settles back into the tunnels.

❄️

October – March

Adults spend the winter inside the wood and wait for spring. The holes look empty, but the tunnels are still occupied.

How our carpenter bee treatment works

1

Inspect every side of the house

We check fascia, eaves, decks, trim, sheds and outdoor structures, and count the active holes so you know how big the problem is.

2

Treat the tunnels

A licensed technician treats the active galleries directly, so bees coming and going contact the treatment inside the wood.

3

Wait, then close them up

The holes need to stay open for a short time after treatment so returning bees go back in. We'll tell you when to plug them, usually with a dowel, wood filler or caulk.

4

Protect the wood

Painting or staining the treated wood, especially bare undersides, makes it far less inviting next spring.

How much damage do carpenter bees do?

Carpenter bees don't eat wood the way termites do. Each female chews a tunnel about half an inch wide, usually turning and running along the grain for several inches, to raise her young. One tunnel is mostly cosmetic.

The trouble is that they come back. Year after year, new bees extend the old tunnels and drill new ones nearby, and a fascia board or deck rail can end up honeycombed inside. Add woodpeckers tearing the wood open to get at the larvae, plus water getting into the holes and starting rot, and the damage adds up. That's when trim starts cracking and rail sections need replacing.

Treating early keeps the repair small. If you already have badly damaged boards, ask us what repair would involve when we inspect.

Not sure the holes are from bees? Wood damage can also come from carpenter ants or termites. If you see winged insects swarming indoors in spring, or mud tubes on the foundation, see our termite inspection and treatment in Wayne page.

Carpenter bee or bumble bee?

They look alike from a distance, but they behave very differently:

Bee and wasp removal in Wayne beyond carpenter bees

Carpenter bees are the spring problem. By summer, Wayne homeowners are calling about other stinging insects too:

  • Yellow jackets nesting in the lawn, mulch beds and wall voids, and crashing backyard cookouts by August.
  • Paper wasps under eaves, deck rails, lake-house porches and play sets.
  • Bald-faced hornets hanging gray paper nests in trees and shrubs, common near wooded lots.
  • Honey bees swarming in late spring. We don't exterminate honey bees β€” we work with a local beekeeper to relocate them.

Businesses along Routes 23 and 46, around Willowbrook Mall and in Wayne's office parks get nests at entrances, signs and outdoor seating too. We handle those visits around your hours; see commercial pest control in Wayne.

Carpenter Bee & Wasp Questions from Wayne

Do you offer carpenter bee control in Wayne, NJ?

Yes. We inspect the house, treat the active carpenter bee tunnels and explain when to plug the holes and how to protect the wood. Call or text 973-510-2585.

When is the best time to treat carpenter bees?

Spring, when the adults are active and drilling β€” usually April and May in North Jersey. Treating then reaches the bees before a new generation develops in the wood.

Should I plug the carpenter bee holes right away?

Not before treatment. Holes should stay open for a short time after we treat so returning bees contact it; then they can be plugged and the wood painted or stained.

Do carpenter bees sting?

Males hover aggressively but have no stinger. Females can sting but rarely do unless handled.

Will carpenter bees come back every year?

Yes, if the tunnels and bare wood are left as they are. New bees reuse old tunnels, which is why treating, plugging and painting matters.

Do carpenter bees damage the house?

A single tunnel is minor, but years of reuse, plus woodpeckers and water getting in, can badly weaken fascia, trim and deck rails.

Is it carpenter bees or termites?

Carpenter bees leave round holes and sawdust on the outside of wood. Termites stay hidden, leave mud tubes and swarm indoors. If you're not sure, text us a photo.

Do you also remove wasp nests in Wayne?

Yes. We treat and remove paper wasp, yellow jacket and hornet nests, and relocate honey bees with a local beekeeper.

How much does a carpenter bee exterminator cost in Wayne?

It depends on how many holes there are, how high they are and how many parts of the house are involved. Quotes are free.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Silver Bullet Pest Control holds NJ License 90568B and has over 15 years of experience.
