Do Carpenter Bees Sting? (The Scary One Can't)
Big, shiny, buzzing right at your face like it owns the porch. Meet the male carpenter bee: all bark, no bite. Literally.
Quick answer: Male carpenter bees can’t sting at all — they just hover and bluff. Females can, but rarely do unless handled. The real problem is the wood: they drill perfectly round, about ½-inch holes in decks, fascia, railings and trim, and come back to the same wood year after year.
How to tell a carpenter bee from a bumble bee
| Carpenter bee | Bumble bee | |
|---|---|---|
| Abdomen (rear end) | Shiny, bare, black | Fuzzy, often with yellow |
| Nest | Tunnels in wood | Underground or in old burrows |
| Hangs around | Decks, eaves, fences, siding | Flowers |
Why the holes matter
- Tunnels get longer every year as bees reuse them.
- Woodpeckers rip open the wood to eat the larvae — more damage.
- Holes let in water, leading to rot.
- Yellow sawdust below a round hole = active carpenter bee.
How to stop them
- Paint or stain bare wood — they prefer untreated, unpainted wood.
- Treat active holes, then plug and seal them after the bees are gone.
- Replace badly damaged boards.
- Check again in spring — that’s when they return.
