Where wasps build on Union homes

Most of Union is single-family neighborhoods of Cape Cods, colonials and split-levels with real yards. That gives wasps three favorite places:

Open paper wasp comb hanging from a ledge
Up high

Under eaves, gutters and porch ceilings

  • Open, umbrella-shaped comb
  • Wasps with long dangling legs
  • Nest grows from a few cells to dozens

Paper wasps like a dry, sheltered overhang that gets morning sun: soffits, the underside of gutters, porch and garage ceilings, shutters, light fixtures and the top of a door frame. They're usually calm until someone bumps the nest.

Gray paper hornet nest built around a tree branch
In the landscaping

Trees, shrubs and hedges

  • Gray paper ball, often football-sized by August
  • Black-and-white insects
  • Very defensive near the nest

Bald-faced hornets hang their nests in trees, foundation shrubs, arborvitae and hedges, and sometimes on the side of a shed or house. Trimming a hedge in late summer is how many Union homeowners find one.

Cracks and gaps in a masonry foundation wall
Hidden

In the ground and inside walls

  • Steady stream of yellow-and-black insects into one hole
  • Buzzing or scratching inside a wall
  • Wasps coming in through a light or outlet

Yellow jackets nest out of sight: old rodent holes in the lawn, under stoops and walkways, behind siding, and in gaps around vents, pipes and the sill. These nests get very big by fall and are the ones that sting the most people.

Wasp, yellow jacket, hornet or honey bee?

Getting this right decides how the nest is handled, so it's the first thing we confirm:

Not sure? A photo taken from a few yards away is usually enough for us to tell. Never climb a ladder to get a closer look.

What about bees?

Honey bees are not pests, and we don't treat them like a wasp nest. When a honey bee swarm lands on a tree or a colony moves into a wall in Union, we work with a local beekeeper so the bees are relocated instead of exterminated. If a colony has been inside a wall for a while, the honeycomb may need to come out too, so the wall doesn't attract new bees or leak honey later. We'll explain what that involves for your house.

A few other bees get confused with wasps:

  • Bumble bees are large and fuzzy and sometimes nest in the ground, under sheds or in old insulation. They rarely sting unless handled.
  • Ground-nesting bees make small mounds in bare spots of the lawn in spring. They're mostly harmless and short-lived. See ground bees.
  • Carpenter bees drill perfectly round holes in fascia boards, decks and railings. If that's what you're seeing, ask us what we can do for your situation.

Booking a visit in Union, and what to do until we get there

We're based in Garfield in Bergen County and we serve Union Township along with the rest of Union County. Because it's a longer drive, most Union visits are scheduled ahead, usually grouped with other jobs in the area. Same-day service is sometimes possible, especially when a nest is right by a door or someone in the home is allergic, so call and ask.

Until the technician arrives:

  1. Keep people and pets away from the nest, and put a cone or chair near a ground nest so nobody mows over it.
  2. Use a different door if the nest is by the front steps or garage.
  3. Don't plug the hole on a wall or ground nest. Yellow jackets that can't get out the usual way can chew into the house.
  4. Skip the store spray. A partial hit makes the nest angrier and often moves the colony.
  5. Text us the photo and the location (front eave, back hedge, under the deck) so we bring the right equipment.

Stung and having trouble breathing, throat or face swelling, or feeling faint? That's a medical emergency. Call 911 first, then deal with the nest later.

How we remove wasp and hornet nests

1

Walk the property

We confirm the insect and look for every nest, not just the one you called about. Eaves, decks, sheds, hedges and the lawn often hide a second or third.

2

Treat each nest

Wearing protective gear, the technician treats the nest directly, including the entry hole on wall and ground nests where the colony can't be seen.

3

Take down what's reachable

Once activity stops, exposed nests under eaves, porches and railings come down so you aren't left looking at them.

4

Point out the openings

We show you the gaps in siding, vents and trim that wasps keep using, and can seal them. See entry point sealing.

Expect a few returning foragers around a treated wall or ground nest for a day or so. That's normal; they're coming back to a nest that's dying.

Wasp season month by month in Union County

WhenWhat's happeningWhat to do
April to MayA single queen builds a small starter nest, often under eaves or a porch roofKnock-down time. A walnut-sized nest is the easiest job of the year
June to JulyWorkers hatch and nests grow fast; yellow jackets settle into lawns and wallsWatch the eaves, deck and play set; call before the nest gets big
August to SeptemberNests are at full size; yellow jackets hit cookouts, pools and trash cansPeak sting season. Don't mow or trim near a known nest
OctoberColonies start to fail, but late nests are still active on warm daysStill worth treating if it's near a door
November to MarchWorkers die; only new queens survive, hidden awaySeal gaps and vents now so next spring's queen has fewer spots

Old nests aren't reused, but a well-sheltered spot will often attract a new queen the next year, which is why sealing matters.

Yards, schools and businesses in Union

A lot of Union stings happen during ordinary yard work: running the mower over a yellow jacket hole, trimming the hedge along the driveway, or reaching under the deck for a hose. Pools, swing sets, grills and recycling bins pull yellow jackets in close from late July on.

  • Homeowners: check the underside of deck rails, play set roofs, mailbox posts and grill covers once a week in summer.
  • Landlords and rentals near Kean University and around town: tenants often don't report a nest until someone is stung. A quick look at the eaves each spring saves a call later.
  • Stores, offices and restaurants along Route 22 and Morris Avenue: nests over entrances, in sign boxes and near dumpsters are a safety problem for customers. We schedule around your hours. See commercial pest control.

Also seeing big black ants around the deck or porch? That's a different problem. See carpenter ants in Union.

Wasp & Yellow Jacket Questions from Union

Do you come to Union Township?

Yes. We're based in Garfield and serve Union and the rest of Union County. Most visits are scheduled ahead; same-day is sometimes possible, so call or text 973-510-2585.

What's the hole in my lawn with yellow jackets going in and out?

That's almost always a yellow jacket nest in an old rodent hole or under a root. Mark it, keep the mower away, and don't pour anything into it.

Can I spray a paper wasp nest myself?

A tiny spring nest is sometimes manageable, but most stings happen during DIY attempts on ladders. If anyone is allergic, or the nest is big, high or inside a wall, call a professional.

Why are wasps coming in through my light fixture?

There's likely a yellow jacket nest in the wall or ceiling void and they've found a way inside. Don't seal the opening; call us so the nest itself gets treated.

Do you kill honey bees?

No. Honey bee swarms and colonies are relocated with a local beekeeper.

Will the wasps come back next year?

They don't reuse old nests, but a sheltered spot can attract a new queen. Sealing gaps and checking the eaves in spring helps.

When are yellow jackets worst in New Jersey?

Late summer into early fall, when colonies are largest and the workers go after food and sugary drinks.

Is the treatment safe for kids and pets?

We explain where and how we treat and any precautions before we start, and nests near play areas get extra care.

Do you handle businesses on Route 22?

Yes. We remove nests from storefronts, signs, entrances and dumpster areas and schedule around your hours.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Silver Bullet Pest Control holds NJ License 90568B and has over 15 years of experience.
