Does bed bug spray work?

Bed bug spray works only partly: store-bought sprays kill the bed bugs they hit directly, but they rarely get rid of an infestation, because most bugs and eggs are hidden in seams, cracks and furniture the spray never reaches, and many bed bugs have become resistant to common household insecticides. Foggers (bug bombs) are worse, since they don't reach hiding spots and can spread bugs to other rooms. Ending an infestation usually takes a full inspection and a professional treatment such as heat. Silver Bullet Pest Control offers bed bug heat treatment across North Jersey. Call or text 973-510-2585.

Types of bed bug spray and how well they work

"Bed bug spray" covers several very different products. Here's how each one does against a real infestation:

ProductWhat it doesDoes it end an infestation?
Contact aerosol spraysKill bugs they wet directly; little effect once dryNo β€” only kills the bugs you can see and hit
Residual spraysLeave a film meant to kill bugs that cross it laterRarely on their own; many bed bugs resist common ingredients
"Natural" or essential-oil spraysKill some bugs on contactNo β€” short-lived and don't reach hidden bugs or eggs
Rubbing alcoholCan kill bugs on contactNo β€” evaporates fast, misses eggs, and is a serious fire hazard
Foggers / bug bombsRelease mist that settles on open surfacesNo β€” doesn't reach cracks and seams; can push bugs into other rooms
Powders (like diatomaceous earth)Dry out bugs that crawl through over daysSlow; helps as one part of a plan, not alone

Why bed bug spray alone usually fails

People are often surprised that the spray "worked" β€” the bugs they sprayed died β€” and the bites kept coming. That's because of how bed bugs live:

  • Most of them are hiding. By the time you see a bed bug, there are usually many more tucked into mattress seams, box spring fabric, bed frame joints, headboards, nightstand drawers, baseboards, outlets, picture frames and the couch.
  • Eggs are tough. Many sprays don't kill eggs well. A new generation hatches after you think you're done.
  • Resistance. Bed bug populations in many areas have become resistant to the pyrethroid-type insecticides found in many household sprays. A spray that kills a lab bed bug may barely bother the ones in your bedroom.
  • Repellent sprays scatter them. Bugs that sense a spray move away β€” deeper into furniture or into the next room or apartment.
  • They can wait. Bed bugs can go a long time between meals, so a quiet week doesn't mean they're gone.
  • You can't spray everywhere. Labels limit where you can safely spray, especially on mattresses, pillows and kids' bedding.

That's why bed bugs are one of the few pests where DIY almost never finishes the job. Our bed bug spray vs. professional treatment page goes deeper on the comparison.

When bed bug spray can help

🧳

After travel

Treating the outside of luggage and checking it in the garage or bathtub after a trip β€” see bed bugs from a hotel.

πŸͺ²

A single bug you can see

A contact spray kills the bug in front of you. Save it on tape first so it can be identified.

πŸ›οΈ

Alongside a real plan

Between professional visits, only where we tell you, and only with products labeled for bed bugs.

πŸ”

Not as a test

Spraying won't tell you how big the problem is. An inspection will.

If you've already sprayed, that's fine β€” just tell us what you used and where, because it changes how we plan the treatment.

If you use bed bug spray, use it safely

Never use foggers, rubbing alcohol or outdoor insecticides on beds or furniture. Foggers and alcohol are flammable and have caused house fires, and products not labeled for indoor bedding can harm you, your kids and your pets.

  • Read the label and follow it exactly. The label is the law for pesticides, and it says where the product can and can't go.
  • Only use products labeled for bed bugs and for the surface you're treating.
  • Don't soak mattresses, pillows, cribs or kids' bedding.
  • Ventilate the room, keep kids and pets out until it's dry, and wash your hands.
  • Don't throw out furniture or move belongings to another room or a friend's house β€” that spreads bed bugs.
  • Live in an apartment? Tell your landlord. Spraying one unit often pushes bugs next door. See bed bugs in apartments.

What actually gets rid of bed bugs

An infestation ends when every life stage is killed in every place it hides. That usually takes a few steps working together:

1

Confirm and map it

A careful inspection of beds, furniture, baseboards and nearby rooms shows how far the bugs have spread.

2

Wash and dry on high heat

Bedding, clothes and fabrics run through a hot dryer kill bugs and eggs. Bag them so they don't drop bugs on the way.

3

Treat the hiding places

Heat treatment raises the room to a temperature that kills bed bugs and eggs deep inside mattresses, furniture and cracks.

4

Encase and follow up

Mattress and box spring encasements trap any survivors, and a follow-up check confirms the problem is over.

Make sure it's really bed bugs

Before spending money on sprays or treatment, confirm what you have. Bed bug signs:

  • Small flat, reddish-brown bugs about the size of an apple seed, in mattress seams and bed frame joints.
  • Tiny dark spots (dried droppings) on sheets, mattress tags and seams.
  • Small blood smears on sheets, and shed skins.
  • Bites in lines or clusters on skin that was exposed while sleeping. Bites alone aren't proof β€” many people don't react at all, and other things cause bites.

Many "bed bugs" sent to us turn out to be carpet beetle larvae or other insects. See carpet beetles vs. bed bugs and what attracts bed bugs, or just text us a photo.

Bed Bug Spray Questions

Does bed bug spray kill bed bugs?

It kills bed bugs that it hits directly. The problem is the ones it doesn't reach: bugs and eggs hidden in seams, cracks and furniture. Many bed bugs are also resistant to common household sprays, so even bugs that are hit may survive. That's why spraying alone rarely ends an infestation.

Do bed bug bombs or foggers work?

No. Foggers settle on open surfaces, but bed bugs hide in cracks, seams and inside furniture where the mist doesn't reach. They can push bugs into other rooms or apartments, and foggers are flammable and have caused fires. We don't recommend them for bed bugs.

Does rubbing alcohol kill bed bugs?

Alcohol can kill a bed bug on direct contact, but it evaporates fast, misses most eggs and hidden bugs, and is highly flammable. Spraying it on mattresses and furniture is a real fire risk. It's not a safe or effective way to treat an infestation.

Why do I still have bed bugs after spraying?

Most likely, the spray only reached the bugs you could see. Eggs and bugs hidden in the bed frame, furniture and baseboards survived, and some may be resistant to the product. Repellent sprays can also drive them deeper. An inspection shows where they really are.

How long does bed bug spray last?

Contact sprays stop working once they dry. Residual sprays last longer on surfaces, but resistant bed bugs can walk across them and survive. Either way, spray won't keep treating bugs hidden inside mattresses and furniture.

Can I spray my mattress for bed bugs?

Only with a product whose label says it can be used on mattresses, and only exactly as the label says. Never soak a mattress or treat kids' bedding with a general insecticide. Encasing the mattress after treatment is often a better option.

What kills bed bugs instantly?

Direct contact with a spray, steam or high heat kills a bed bug quickly. Killing the one in front of you is easy; finding all the others is the hard part. Heat treatment works because it reaches the hidden bugs and eggs throughout the room.

Is professional bed bug treatment worth it?

For an established infestation, usually yes. Professional heat treatment reaches the hidden bugs and eggs that sprays miss and isn't affected by insecticide resistance. Months of sprays, foggers and new bedding often cost more in the end and still leave the bugs.

How much does bed bug treatment cost?

It depends on how many rooms are affected, how much furniture and clutter there is, the type of building and the method used. We inspect and give a free quote. Our bed bug treatment cost page explains the factors.
