Bed Bug Bites vs. Other Bites
Woke up with itchy bites and not sure what caused them? Bites alone can't prove bed bugs, but the pattern, where they are and what else you find in the bed can. Here's how to tell bed bug bites from fleas, mosquitoes, spiders and other look-alikes.

How can you tell if bites are from bed bugs?
Bed bug bites are usually small, red, itchy bumps in a line or tight cluster on skin that was exposed while you slept, like the arms, neck, face and shoulders. But bites look different on everyone, and some people don't react at all, so the surest sign is finding the bugs or their traces: tiny blood spots on sheets, dark specks along mattress seams, shed skins or live apple-seed-sized bugs. A Silver Bullet bed bug inspection is $150.
Bed bug bites vs. other bites
| Bite | Where on the body | What it looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Bed bugs | Arms, neck, face, shoulders, back: skin exposed in bed | Small red itchy bumps in a line or cluster; new ones after sleeping |
| Fleas | Ankles and lower legs | Tiny red dots, often in groups, very itchy; common with pets |
| Mosquitoes | Any exposed skin, usually outdoors | Single puffy, raised bumps that show up soon after the bite |
| Spiders | Anywhere, usually one bite | A single red bump, sometimes with two tiny marks; rare indoors |
| Scabies or skin rash | Hands, wrists, waist | A rash or tiny burrow lines, itching worse at night; see a doctor |
This is general information, not medical advice. If bites swell, spread, blister or show signs of infection, see a doctor.

Small rust or red spots on sheets and pillowcases from bites or crushed bugs.
Dark specks
Tiny black or brown dots, like marker dots, along mattress seams and in cracks of the bed frame. These are bed bug droppings.
Live bugs
Flat, oval, reddish-brown bugs about the size of an apple seed. Young ones are smaller and paler.
Eggs and shed skins
Pale, pinhead-sized eggs and empty light-brown skins in seams, cracks and folds.
Musty smell
A sweet, musty smell in heavy infestations.
Recent travel or used furniture
Hotels, travel, moving, and used beds or couches are the most common ways bed bugs get into a home.
What to do if you think it's bed bugs
Don't move rooms
Sleeping on the couch or in another room can spread bed bugs to new places.
Skip store-bought bombs
Foggers and sprays scatter bed bugs into walls and nearby rooms and don't kill the eggs.

Bed bug bite questions
How can you tell if bites are from bed bugs?
Bed bug bites are usually small, red, itchy bumps in a line or cluster on skin exposed while you slept. Because bites look different on everyone, the surest sign is finding blood spots, dark specks, shed skins or live bugs in the bed.
Do bed bug bites show up right away?
Not always. Some people react within hours, others a day or more later, and some don't react at all. That's why two people can sleep in the same bed and only one gets bites.
What's the difference between flea bites and bed bug bites?
Flea bites are usually tiny and around the ankles and lower legs, often in homes with pets. Bed bug bites are more often on the arms, neck, face and shoulders and show up after sleeping.
Can I see bed bugs with my eyes?
Yes. Adults are about the size of an apple seed, flat and reddish-brown. Check mattress seams, the box spring, headboard and bed frame joints with a flashlight.
How much is a bed bug inspection?
A Silver Bullet bed bug inspection is $150. Treatment is priced after the inspection based on how many rooms are affected.
