Who does bat guano cleanup in Scotch Plains, NJ?

Silver Bullet Pest Control does bat guano cleanup and sanitation in Scotch Plains, NJ: we confirm the bats are gone or seal them out on the dates New Jersey allows, then HEPA-vacuum the droppings, remove and replace soiled insulation, treat the odor and seal the entry points. Bat guano should never be swept or vacuumed with a household vacuum, because its dust can carry a fungus that causes the lung infection histoplasmosis. We serve Scotch Plains with visits scheduled ahead β€” call or text 973-510-2585 for a free quote.

Why bat guano cleanup needs care

Guano isn't just messy. Built-up droppings in a closed attic cause three real problems:

  • Histoplasmosis. A fungus can grow in bat and bird droppings. When the droppings are disturbed and the dust is breathed in, it can cause a lung infection. Most people who breathe in small amounts don't get very sick, but people with weak immune systems, infants and older adults are more at risk. This is the main reason we don't sweep or use household vacuums.
  • Odor and urine. Bat urine soaks into insulation, wood and drywall. In warm weather the smell can move into the rooms below.
  • Weight and damage. A large, long-term colony can leave heavy piles that stain ceilings and ruin insulation.

Bats can also carry rabies. You won't catch it from dry droppings, but don't handle bats, and if a bat ever turns up in a room where someone was sleeping, keep it and call the health department about testing.

Don't go up and start sweeping. Leave the attic closed, keep the HVAC return away from it if you can, and call 973-510-2585.

Bats and guano in Scotch Plains homes

Scotch Plains is mostly single-family homes β€” colonials, split-levels and ranches on wooded lots, with the Watchung Reservation along the north side of town and parks and golf courses mixed in. That's good bat country: plenty of insects at dusk over the woods, ponds and open lawns, and plenty of quiet attics nearby.

Where we usually find guano in homes like these:

  • Gable ends and ridge vents β€” bats roost just inside and droppings pile up on the insulation below.
  • Soffits and fascia where gutters overflow and wood has pulled away.
  • Attached garages and the space over them, common on split-levels.
  • Behind shutters and loose siding β€” guano stuck to the wall outside is a big clue.
  • Chimney chases where flashing has separated.

Scotch Plains is in Union County, outside our core service area, so we schedule visits ahead. Same-day is sometimes possible, but plan on booking a day or more out.

The bats have to be out before cleanup starts

Cleaning an attic while bats still live there wastes the work β€” the droppings come right back. New Jersey also limits when a colony can be sealed out:

Time of yearExclusion allowed? What we do for cleanup
April 1 – 30YesExclude the bats, then schedule cleanup
May 1 – July 31No β€” pups can't flyInspect and plan; cleanup waits until bats are out
August 1 – October 15YesThe most common time to exclude and then clean
October 16 – March 31Only after an acoustic survey shows no batsWe run the acoustic survey ourselves, then seal and clean

Bats already gone, or the colony moved out on its own? We confirm it, seal the gaps and go straight to cleanup. More on the exclusion side: licensed bat exclusion in NJ.

Our bat guano cleanup and sanitation process

1

Inspect and confirm

We check the attic, walls and roofline, confirm it's bat guano, measure how far it has spread and make sure no bats are still inside.

2

Seal the way in

Gaps at the ridge, gables, soffits and chimney are closed so bats can't return once the attic is clean.

3

Protect the house

We suit up with respirators, contain the work area and keep the dust from reaching living space.

4

HEPA removal

Droppings are removed with HEPA vacuums. Soiled insulation is bagged and taken out.

5

Sanitize and control odor

Surfaces are cleaned and treated for odor so the smell doesn't keep rising into the rooms below.

6

Replace insulation

We install new insulation ourselves, so the attic is clean and the house holds heat again.

Need the entry points or wood repaired too? See wildlife damage repair.

What a full cleanup can include

Attic insulation in need of removal
Most common

Insulation removal and replacement

  • Guano and urine soaked in
  • Matted or flattened insulation
  • Smell coming through the ceiling
  • Lost heating and cooling

When insulation is soiled, cleaning it isn't enough. We remove it, clean the attic floor and put down new insulation.

Wood rafters and framing in an attic
Surfaces

Wood and framing sanitation

  • Stained rafters and joists
  • Droppings in hard corners
  • Odor in the wood
  • Greasy marks at entry gaps

Once the insulation is out, we can reach the framing and treat the surfaces where bats roosted.

Sealing and follow-up

  • Ridge, gable and soffit gaps
  • Chimney flashing
  • Loose siding and trim
  • A follow-up check

Sealing is what keeps the clean attic clean. We close every opening bats were using and check that nothing gets back in.

Can you clean bat guano yourself?

😷

Dust masks aren't enough

A paper dust mask doesn't stop fine fungal dust. Proper respirators and containment are needed.

🧹

Sweeping spreads it

Brooms and shop vacs blow guano dust into the air and through the house.

πŸ¦‡

Bats may still be there

Cleaning before exclusion means the droppings come back, and disturbing bats in pup season is a problem.

What you can do

Keep the attic door closed, don't store things up there, and photograph what you see for us.

A few dry pellets on a porch can be wetted down and wiped up with gloves on. Piles in an attic are a job for HEPA equipment.

Bat Guano Cleanup Questions

Is bat guano dangerous to clean up?

It can be. Disturbed guano releases dust that may carry the fungus behind histoplasmosis, a lung infection. That's why professionals use respirators, containment and HEPA vacuums instead of brooms or household vacuums. Leave the attic closed until it's cleaned properly.

How do I know if droppings in my attic are from bats?

Bat guano piles up under roosting spots and crumbles into dry powder with shiny insect pieces when crushed with a stick. Mouse droppings are firmer, pointed and scattered along walls. Text a photo to 973-510-2585 and we'll tell you which it is.

Can you clean the attic while bats are still living there?

Not usefully. The bats would keep adding droppings, and New Jersey only allows a colony to be sealed out at certain times. We exclude the bats first on the allowed dates, seal the gaps, then clean so the attic stays clean.

Do I need to replace my insulation after bats?

Usually, if guano and urine have soaked into it. Soiled insulation holds odor and droppings and loses its insulating value. We remove it, clean and sanitize the attic, and install new insulation ourselves.

How long does bat guano cleanup take?

Most attic cleanups take one to a few days, depending on how much guano there is, the size and access of the attic, and whether insulation is being replaced. We'll give you a time estimate with the quote.

Will the smell go away after cleanup?

In most homes, yes. Removing the guano and soiled insulation takes out the source, and odor treatment handles what's left in the wood. Strong urine stains in drywall or wood may need extra work, which we'll point out during the inspection.

How much does bat guano cleanup cost in Scotch Plains?

It depends on how much guano there is, whether the insulation needs full replacement, attic access and whether bats still need to be excluded. We give a free quote after seeing the attic rather than quoting a number blind.

Do you serve Scotch Plains?

Yes. Scotch Plains is in Union County, outside our core area of Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties, so we schedule visits ahead. Same-day is sometimes possible, but plan on booking in advance.

Does homeowners insurance cover bat guano cleanup?

It depends on your policy, and many policies exclude damage from animals. Call your insurance company and ask. We can give you photos and a written description of what we found and what we did.

Can bat guano come through the ceiling?

Guano itself rarely falls through, but urine and odor can stain and soak drywall, and a heavy pile can sag a ceiling over time. Brown stains or a smell in the room below an attic are worth checking soon.
