Spring Pest Control
In North Jersey, spring is when the pest year starts. Ants march in after the first warm rain, termites swarm out of the floor, wasp queens pick a spot under the eaves, and squirrels and raccoons have babies in attics. This guide walks through what shows up in March, April, May and June, what each one means, and what a spring pest control visit does to get ahead of it.

What is spring pest control?
Spring pest control in NJ means inspecting and treating your home in March through June, when ants, termite swarmers, wasps, mosquitoes, ticks and nesting wildlife become active, so you stop problems while colonies and nests are still small. A good spring visit identifies what's waking up around your house, treats the outside perimeter and any active nests, and points out the moisture and entry gaps that invite pests in. Silver Bullet Pest Control does spring inspections and recurring service across Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties; call or text 973-510-2585 for a free quote.
Why spring is the best time to start pest control
Most insects spend the New Jersey winter slowed down β in the soil, under bark, inside wall voids or as eggs. Once the ground warms and the rain starts, they all get going at roughly the same time. Colonies are small, queens are just starting nests, and wildlife is looking for a quiet place to raise young.
That makes spring the cheapest and easiest time to deal with pests. A wasp nest the size of a golf ball in April is a five-minute job; the same nest in August can hold thousands of wasps. An ant colony that's treated as soon as the first trail appears doesn't get a chance to split into satellite nests. And a raccoon or squirrel entry hole that's found before babies are born can be handled without a family of animals in the attic.
North Jersey's housing makes spring especially busy. Many homes in Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties are older, with wood framing near the soil, stone or block foundations, and attics with old vents and soffits. Those are exactly the spots spring pests use first.
Spring pest calendar for North Jersey
Weather shifts this by a couple of weeks every year, but this is the usual pattern:
| Month | What shows up | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| March | Mice moving out of walls, stink bugs and other overwintering bugs waking up indoors, first ants on warm days | Bugs on sunny windows, droppings in the kitchen, early ant trails |
| April | Termite swarms (often after a warm rain), carpenter ants, wasp queens starting nests, squirrel and raccoon babies in attics | Piles of wings by windows, large black ants, chewed vents and noises overhead |
| May | Ant season in full swing, carpenter bees at decks and eaves, ticks in yards, honey bee swarms | Small ant trails in kitchens, round holes in wood, ticks after yard work |
| June | Mosquitoes, wasp nests growing, fleas outdoors, yellow jackets in the ground | Bites in the evening, wasps under eaves and railings, ground holes in lawns |
If you only do one thing, have the outside of the house checked in April. That catches termites, carpenter ants, wasp queens and wildlife entry points in a single visit.
The main spring pests in NJ homes
These are the calls that fill our schedule from March to June:

Ants
- Trails on counters after rain
- Tiny dirt piles along driveways and walks
- Large black ants near windows and decks
Odorous house ants, pavement ants and carpenter ants all get active in spring. Small ants are a nuisance; carpenter ants can hollow out damp wood. Treating the colony early, not just the trail, keeps them from spreading.

Termites
- Swarm of winged insects from a floor or wall
- Piles of shed wings by windows
- Mud tubes on foundation walls
Subterranean termite colonies send out swarmers in spring. The swarm itself doesn't damage anything β but it tells you a colony is feeding nearby, possibly in your house. That's the time to get an inspection.

Wasps and bees
- Single wasp building a small nest under eaves
- Bees around holes in deck boards
- A honey bee swarm hanging from a branch
Wasp queens start nests alone in spring, so early removal is quick. Honey bee swarms are relocated with a local beekeeper, not exterminated. Carpenter bees chewing round holes in wood are a separate problem β ask us about it.
Spring swarmers: termites or flying ants?
The most panicked spring call we get starts with "there are hundreds of flying bugs coming out of my floor." In North Jersey it's either termite swarmers or flying ants, and they look alike at first glance. Here's how to tell:
- Waist: ants have a pinched, narrow waist; termites have a thick, straight body.
- Antennae: ant antennae bend like an elbow; termite antennae are straight and beaded.
- Wings: ants have longer front wings than back wings; termites have four wings of equal length that break off easily and pile up.
Termite swarms usually happen on a warm day, often after rain, and are over in under an hour. If you find piles of wings on windowsills, in a basement or near a sliding door, save a few swarmers in a zip bag or on clear tape and text us a photo. Don't spray them and vacuum everything up first β the evidence helps us find where the colony is coming in.
If it is termites, we treat the colony and, if the wood is damaged, we repair it ourselves β sill plates, joists, beams and framing. See flying ants vs. termite swarmers for more photos and details.
Babies in the attic: spring wildlife season
Spring is also baby season. Gray squirrels often have a litter in late winter or early spring, raccoons usually give birth in spring, and bats return to attics and form maternity colonies. A sound in the attic in April is often a mother with young.
- Squirrels: scratching and running in the early morning and late afternoon, chewed holes at roof edges and soffits.
- Raccoons: heavy thumping at night, chirping or crying sounds, torn vents or roof returns.
- Bats: squeaking at dusk, droppings under a gable or by the chimney, bats leaving at sunset.
The order of work matters with babies. Sealing the hole while young are inside traps them and the mother will tear her way back in. We plan removal and exclusion so the whole family leaves first. For bats, New Jersey rules limit timing: exclusion is allowed in April, but not from May 1 through July 31 while pups can't fly yet. If you see bats in spring, call early β April is the window.

Spring pest prevention checklist for homeowners
Clean gutters and fix drips
Overflowing gutters and leaky hose bibs soak the wood at the edge of the house β the first place carpenter ants and termites look.
Pull mulch and soil back
Keep mulch thin and a few inches away from the foundation, and don't let soil touch siding or wood trim.
Trim branches and shrubs
Branches touching the roof are a highway for squirrels, raccoons and ants. Trim them back from the house.
Check screens, vents and soffits
Look for torn window screens, open dryer vents, loose soffit panels and gaps around pipes and wires.
Empty standing water
Buckets, kids' toys, clogged gutters and tarps hold rainwater where mosquitoes breed. Dump them weekly.
Walk the yard for nests
Look under railings, deck edges and eaves for small wasp nests while they're still tiny.
Do this once in March or April and again in early June. If you find something you're not sure about, text us a photo.
What a spring pest control visit includes
A spring visit from Silver Bullet Pest Control is built around what's actually around your house, not a one-size spray. Here's what we usually do:
- Inspection inside and out: foundation, basement, kitchen and bathrooms, decks, porches, garage, roofline and attic access.
- Identification: we tell you exactly what pests are present or likely, and what's just a harmless visitor.
- Perimeter treatment: an exterior treatment around the foundation and entry points where it makes sense, to stop ants and crawling insects before they get in.
- Nest treatment: early wasp nests, ant colonies and other active nests are treated or removed on the spot when possible.
- Entry points: we point out gaps, vents and openings that invite mice, squirrels and insects, and can seal them.
- Plain-English report: what we found, what we did, and what you can do to help.
Need mosquito control too? Our mosquito treatment starts from $95 plus tax β see mosquito control. For ticks in the yard, see tick spray for yards.
We're based in Garfield and serve Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties, plus parts of Morris and Union with visits scheduled ahead. In our core counties, same-day appointments are often available.

Spring Pest Control Questions
When should I start pest control in the spring?
In North Jersey, March or early April is the best time to start, before ant colonies grow and wasp queens finish their first nests. An April exterior inspection catches most spring problems in one visit.
What pests come out in spring in NJ?
The main spring pests are ants, termite swarmers, carpenter ants, wasps and bees, ticks and, by late spring, mosquitoes. Squirrels, raccoons and bats also raise young in attics in spring.
Why do I see so many ants in spring?
Warm weather and rain wake up outdoor colonies and flood their nests, so workers move indoors for food, water and dry space. Treating the colony early keeps the problem from growing all summer.
Are termites active in spring?
Yes β spring is when subterranean termites swarm in New Jersey, usually on a warm day after rain. A swarm inside your home means a colony is nearby and you should get an inspection.
Is spring pest control safe for kids and pets?
Yes, when it's done by a licensed applicator. We explain where and how we treat and any precautions before we start, such as keeping kids and pets off treated areas until they dry.
Do I need pest control every spring?
Many homes benefit from it, especially older homes near trees, water or wooded lots. A recurring plan covers spring and the rest of the year and comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
How much does spring pest control cost?
It depends on the pest, the size of the home and whether it's a one-time visit or a recurring plan. Quotes are free; mosquito treatment starts from $95 plus tax.
Can you remove bats in the spring?
Bat exclusion in New Jersey is allowed in April but not from May 1 through July 31, when young bats can't fly. If you have bats, call early in spring so the work can be done in time.
What can I do myself to prevent spring pests?
Clean gutters, fix leaks, keep mulch away from the foundation, trim branches off the roof, repair screens and dump standing water weekly. These steps remove most of what draws spring pests in.
Do you offer same-day spring service?
Same-day appointments are often available in Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties. Call or text 973-510-2585 and we'll find the earliest time.
