One county, two very different pest pictures

Passaic County is shaped like a long, narrow strip, and pest problems change a lot from one end to the other.

The southern end — Paterson, Passaic, Clifton and the towns next to them — is some of the most built-up land in New Jersey. The Passaic River winds through it, past the Great Falls in Paterson and old mill buildings, apartment blocks, rows of two-family homes and busy shopping streets. Here the calls are mostly about mice, rats, German roaches and bed bugs: pests that thrive where buildings share walls and food is never far away.

The northern end — around West Milford, Ringwood and the Wanaque Reservoir area — is mostly forest, lakes and hills. Homes there deal more with wildlife in attics, carpenter ants, stinging insects, ticks and mice coming in from the woods in fall.

In between, towns like Wayne, Totowa, Little Falls and Woodland Park mix suburban neighborhoods with highway commercial strips along Route 46 and Route 23, and see a bit of both.

We're based in Garfield, just across the river from Clifton and Passaic, so the southern part of the county is very close for us. If you're further north, call and we'll tell you honestly what we can schedule.

Passaic County exterminator for the pests we see most

These three make up most of our calls in the southern half of the county.

Rodent droppings near a gap where mice get into a building
Rodents

Mice & Norway Rats

  • Droppings in drawers, along baseboards or by the boiler
  • Gnawing or scratching in walls at night
  • Rat burrows along fences, sheds and alleys

Mice come in through gaps as small as a dime, especially around old pipes and basement windows. Rats nest outside and raid garbage. We trap, place locked bait stations outside, and seal entries with steel — and mouse service includes 90 days of coverage with unlimited free service calls.

Roaches

German Roaches

  • Small tan roaches in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Roaches out during the day — a sign of a big population
  • Droppings like coffee grounds in cabinet hinges

In apartment buildings, German roaches move through plumbing walls from unit to unit. We use gel baits and targeted treatment where they hide, and recommend checking nearby units. Roach treatment has a 90-day warranty.

Bed bug on a bed sheet
Bed bugs

Bed Bugs

  • Itchy bites in a line or cluster after sleeping
  • Small dark spots on mattress seams and sheets
  • Shed skins along the bed frame or couch

Bed bugs ride in on luggage, used furniture and visitors, then spread through shared walls. We inspect, treat beds, furniture and cracks, and come back to make sure they're gone.

Apartment buildings, landlords and businesses

A large share of Passaic County households rent, and many live in buildings with shared walls, basements and trash areas. That changes how pest control has to work. Spraying one apartment for roaches while the units around it stay infested just moves the problem around.

For landlords and property managers we:

  • Inspect the problem unit and, where needed, the units around it and the common areas
  • Give tenants clear prep instructions before roach or bed bug treatments
  • Seal gaps around pipes, under doors and in the basement so mice can't move freely
  • Put what we found and what we did in writing
  • Set up regular service so problems are caught early

For restaurants, food stores, warehouses and offices — from Main Avenue storefronts to Route 46 plazas — we offer scheduled commercial pest control with rodent monitoring, roach and fly control, and service records you can show an inspector. Restaurant owners can also see pest control for restaurants.

Rules about who pays for pest control in a rental vary by building type, lease and town, and they can change. Check with your town's code enforcement office or the NJ Department of Community Affairs if you're unsure.
