How do you get rid of an opossum in NJ?

Opossum removal in NJ means getting the animal out of the space it's using, by letting it leave on its own or by trapping it, and then sealing the gap under the deck, shed, porch, crawlspace or garage so it can't come back. Taking away easy food like outdoor pet food, open trash and fallen fruit keeps new ones from moving in. Silver Bullet Pest Control is licensed by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife and handles removal, exclusion and cleanup. Call or text 973-510-2585.

What to know about opossums in North Jersey

The Virginia opossum is North America's only marsupial β€” the mother carries her young in a pouch and later on her back. Opossums are about the size of a house cat, with gray fur, a white face, black ears and a long, bare tail. They're common in North Jersey's suburbs and cities, from backyards near the Passaic and Hackensack rivers to parks and rail lines.

  • Night animals. They come out after dark to look for food and usually rest during the day.
  • Wanderers. Many opossums move between several dens and don't stay in one place long β€” unless they find a safe spot with food nearby, like a crawlspace next to a bowl of cat food.
  • Eat almost anything. Pet food, garbage, compost, fallen fruit, birdseed, insects, snails and dead animals.
  • "Playing possum" is real. A badly frightened opossum may fall over, drool and appear dead for a while. It's a defense reaction. Leave it alone and it will usually get up and walk off.
  • Bluffers. A cornered opossum hisses and shows a mouthful of teeth, but would much rather escape than fight.

Where opossums move in

πŸͺ΅

Under decks, sheds and porches

The most common den. Look for a worn gap in the lattice or skirting and a smooth path in the grass.

πŸš—

Garages

They walk in through an open door after the cat food, trash or birdseed, then hide behind boxes and shelves.

🏚️

Crawlspaces and basements

Through a broken vent screen, a gap at the foundation or an open bulkhead. You may hear noise or smell them under the floor.

🏠

Attics and wall gaps

Opossums climb well and can reach a roofline from trees, fences or a low roof, though attics are more often raccoons or squirrels.

Are opossums dangerous to people or pets?

Opossums are among the least aggressive wild animals you'll find around the house, and rabies is uncommon in them. Still, they're wild animals, and a den under or inside the house causes real problems:

  • Bites and scratches if someone or a dog corners one. Any bite from a wild animal should be washed well and checked by a doctor.
  • Droppings and urine under decks, in crawlspaces and garages, which smell and can carry parasites and germs.
  • Fleas and ticks they carry into the den area.
  • Torn insulation and ductwork in crawlspaces.
  • A strong odor if an opossum dies under the house or in a wall.
  • Raiding pet food and trash every night, which also draws in raccoons, skunks and rats.

If you see a mother opossum with young on her back, don't try to separate them. Call us so the family can be moved out together.

What to do if you find an opossum

  • In the garage: keep pets and kids inside, open the garage door and any side door, turn off the lights and leave it alone after dark. Most opossums walk out on their own within a few hours.
  • Playing dead: don't poke it or pick it up. Give it space and it will leave once it feels safe.
  • Under the deck or shed: don't block the hole yet. If the opossum or babies are inside, they'll be trapped, die and leave you with a smell problem.
  • Take away the food: feed pets indoors, use trash cans with locking lids, pick up fallen fruit and bring birdseed in at night.
  • Don't use poison or set your own trap. Poison puts pets and other animals at risk, and an opossum that dies under the house leaves a smell for weeks; a homemade trap often catches the neighbor's cat or a skunk, and trapped wildlife has to be handled under NJ rules.

Many people try animal repellents or lights first. They may move a wandering opossum along, but they won't keep animals out of an open gap.

How Silver Bullet removes opossums

1

Inspect and find the entry

We check the deck, shed, porch, foundation, crawlspace vents, garage and roofline for the gap and any signs of young.

2

Remove the opossum humanely

Depending on where it is, the opossum leaves through a one-way exit or is trapped and handled according to NJ wildlife rules. Mothers and young are kept together.

3

Seal the opening

Gaps under decks, sheds and porches are closed with heavy mesh buried at the base; crawlspace vents and foundation gaps get sturdy screens.

4

Clean up

Droppings, nesting material and soiled insulation are removed, and the area is treated for odor so it doesn't attract the next animal.

Sealing is what keeps another wandering opossum from using the same den next month. More on that: animal proofing and exclusion and animal entry point sealing.

Dead opossum smell and crawlspace cleanup

A strong, sweet, rotten smell from under the floor, a wall or a deck usually means an animal died there β€” and opossums are one of the most common. The smell can last for weeks and draws flies.

We locate and remove the animal, take out soiled insulation and debris, and handle odor control and HEPA cleanup ourselves. When crawlspace or attic insulation has been ruined by droppings and urine, we remove and replace it. See dead animal removal for more.

What affects the cost of opossum removal

We give a free quote after a look at where the opossum is living. What changes the price:

  • Where it is. A garage visit is quicker than an opossum deep in a crawlspace or attic.
  • Removal method and the number of visits needed to confirm it's gone.
  • How much needs sealing. The length of deck or porch to close off, number of vents and foundation gaps.
  • Young. A mother with babies takes more care and time.
  • Cleanup and repairs. Droppings, odor, insulation and damaged skirting or vents.

Our wildlife removal cost guide explains it in more detail. Call or text 973-510-2585. Same-day visits are often available across Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties.

Opossum Removal Questions

How do I get an opossum out from under my house?

First take away food like pet bowls and open trash. Then the opossum needs to leave through a one-way exit or be trapped and removed, and the gap has to be sealed once you're sure the space is empty. Sealing too early can trap an opossum or its young inside, which leads to a bad smell.

Will an opossum leave on its own?

Often, yes. Opossums tend to wander and switch dens. But if it has a safe spot under your deck or in a crawlspace and food close by, it may stay for weeks, and another one may take its place. Removing the food and sealing the gap is what ends the cycle.

Do opossums carry rabies?

Rabies is uncommon in opossums compared with raccoons, skunks and bats, but any wild mammal can carry it. Don't handle an opossum, keep pets away, and if you're bitten or scratched, wash the wound well and call your doctor or local health department.

Are opossums dangerous to dogs and cats?

Opossums usually avoid fights and would rather hiss or play dead. A dog that corners one can still get bitten or scratched. Keep pets inside at night if an opossum is around, feed them indoors, and make sure their vaccinations are up to date.

Why is the opossum playing dead?

It's an involuntary reaction to extreme fear. The opossum goes limp, may drool and give off a bad smell, and can stay that way for a while. Don't touch it. Leave the area and it will usually get up and walk away on its own.

What attracts opossums to my yard?

Easy food and shelter: pet food left outside, trash cans without tight lids, compost, fallen fruit, birdseed, and open spaces under decks, sheds and porches. Remove the food and close the openings, and your yard becomes much less inviting.

Can opossums get in the attic?

Yes, they climb well and can reach a roof from trees, fences or a lower roof. Attic noise is more often raccoons, squirrels or rodents, so it's worth having it identified. We inspect, find the entry and handle whichever animal it turns out to be.

What should I do about a dead opossum smell?

The animal has to be found and removed; air fresheners won't fix it. We locate it under the floor, deck or in the wall, remove it and the soiled material, and treat the area for odor. Call or text 973-510-2585.
