How do you get rid of water bugs and keep them out?

To get rid of water bugs, dry up the standing water and moisture they live on, seal the gaps and drains they use to get in, keep damp areas clean, and call a professional when you keep seeing them. Call Silver Bullet Pest Control at 973-510-2585, a licensed New Jersey exterminator (NJ License 90568B). Most big "water bugs" found inside New Jersey homes turn out to be cockroaches, while true giant water bugs live in ponds and streams, so we identify the insect before we treat. We inspect drains, basements and other wet spots, treat the source and give you prevention tips. Same-day visits are often available, and we speak Spanish.

Why New Jersey homes get water bugs

"Water bug" is a name people use for any big, dark bug that shows up near water. In a house it almost always means a damp spot and a way in. Here are three common situations.

Often called a water bug

Bugs coming up the drains

  • Large dark bugs near floor, sink or tub drains
  • Most active at night when the lights are off
  • Shed skins or egg cases near the drain

Drains connect your house to wet, dark pipes. Bugs that live there come up when the trap dries out or the drain cover is loose. We treat the source and show you how to keep drains from being an open door.

Damp basements

Bugs in a wet basement or crawlspace

  • Bugs around the sump pit, water heater or laundry
  • Musty smell and damp walls or floors
  • Bugs under boxes and clutter on the floor

Leaks, condensation and standing water make basements the favorite spot. Fixing the moisture matters as much as the treatment, so we point out the wet areas and the cracks and gaps they use.

Kitchens & baths

Bugs in the kitchen or bathroom

  • Bugs under the sink or behind the toilet
  • Activity near leaking pipes or a dripping faucet
  • Droppings or egg cases in cabinets

Under-sink cabinets and bathrooms have water, warmth and hiding spots. We inspect behind and under fixtures, treat the cracks they hide in and tell you which leaks to fix.

Water bug or cockroach? How to tell

Giant water bugs are often mistaken for cockroaches, and many big "water bugs" found indoors really are roaches. What you have decides how it gets treated.

Water bugs through the year

🌱

Spring

Rain and melting snow raise moisture in basements, and bugs start moving up from drains and crawlspaces.

☀️

Summer

The busiest time. Warm, humid nights bring big bugs inside, and giant water bugs fly to outdoor lights.

🍂

Fall

As it cools off outside, bugs look for warm, damp spots indoors, like basements and boiler rooms.

❄️

Winter

Roaches stay active in heated basements and around pipes. A good time to fix leaks and seal gaps.

Landlords, restaurants & property managers

Basements, trash rooms and floor drains in multi-unit buildings and restaurants are where these bugs build up. We inspect common areas and units and set up a plan. See commercial pest control.

What does water bug treatment cost?

It depends on what the insect is, how many areas are affected, the size of the home and whether there's a moisture problem to fix. We give a free quote and tell you the price before any work starts. See how much an exterminator costs in NJ.

Water Bug Questions

Where do water bugs hide in a house?

In damp places: floor drains, sink and tub drains, basements, laundry areas, under sinks and anywhere with leaks or standing water.

What are the signs of a water bug problem?

Live bugs, especially at night, cast-off skins, droppings and egg cases (small brown capsules) near damp areas. Seeing them again and again in the same spot means they are living close by.

Are giant water bugs the same as cockroaches?

No. Giant water bugs are predatory insects that live in ponds and streams, but they are often mistaken for cockroaches. Many big "water bugs" found indoors are actually American or Oriental cockroaches. An inspection confirms which one you have.

Do home remedies keep water bugs away?

Keeping areas dry and clean helps the most. Citrus oils, vinegar and essential oils may deter them a little, but they will not fix a moisture or entry problem.

What is the life cycle of a water bug?

Both true water bugs and cockroaches go through incomplete metamorphosis: egg, nymph and adult, with nymphs that look like smaller versions of the adults. Giant water bugs lay their eggs in or near water outdoors. Cockroaches lay eggs inside a small capsule (egg case) hidden in dark, sheltered spots indoors.
