How much does bed bug treatment cost in New Jersey?

Bed bug treatment cost in New Jersey depends mostly on how many rooms are affected, the type of building, how long the bugs have been there and whether heat or chemical treatment is the better fit. Because those vary so much, a fair price can only be given after an inspection, and a single bedroom caught early costs far less than a whole apartment with bugs in the couches. Silver Bullet Pest Control gives a free quote and offers bed bug heat treatment. Call or text 973-510-2585.

What affects the cost of bed bug treatment?

We don't post a one-size price because it would be wrong for most homes. These are the things that actually move the number:

How to keep bed bug treatment affordable

⏱️

Call early

The single biggest factor. A problem caught in one bed is a much smaller job than one that has spread to every room.

πŸ›οΈ

Don't move the bed

Sleeping on the couch or in another room spreads the bugs to a new area β€” and makes the job bigger.

🧺

Bag and dry, don't trash

Clothes and bedding usually don't need to be thrown away. Bag them and run them through a hot dryer as we direct.

🏒

Get neighbors checked

In buildings, treating one unit while the next one stays infested means paying twice. Ask the landlord to inspect around you.

Throwing out a mattress is usually not necessary and can spread bugs through the hallway on the way out. Ask us first.

Bed bug heat treatment vs. chemical treatment

Both can work. The right choice depends on the home, the size of the problem and what can be moved or heated:

Heat treatmentChemical (targeted) treatment
How it worksRooms are heated to a temperature that kills bed bugs and eggsProducts are applied to seams, cracks, furniture and where bugs hide
Gets eggs?Yes, when the heat reaches the hiding spotsEggs are harder to reach, so follow-up visits are part of the plan
VisitsOften fewer visitsUsually a series of visits spaced apart
PrepRemove heat-sensitive items (medications, candles, aerosols, some electronics)Clear areas around beds and furniture, bag laundry
Good fit forHeavy infestations, cluttered rooms, people who want fewer visitsSmaller, early problems or areas where heat isn't practical
CostUsually more up frontUsually less per visit, spread over several

Sometimes the best plan combines the two. We'll explain which fits your home and why after the inspection. More on our main bed bug exterminator page.

Is it really bed bugs? Signs to check first

Plenty of people pay for treatment they didn't need because bites alone were taken as proof. Bites can come from many things, and people react very differently β€” some get welts, some get nothing at all. Look for these signs instead:

  • Live bugs: flat, oval, reddish-brown, about the size of an apple seed. Young ones are smaller and paler.
  • Dark spots: small black or rust-colored dots on mattress seams, the box spring, sheets and headboard. That's bed bug droppings.
  • Shed skins and tiny white eggs in seams, folds and screw holes of the bed frame.
  • Blood smears on sheets or pillowcases.
  • Hiding spots beyond the bed: couch seams, nightstands, baseboards, behind outlet covers and picture frames.

Check the corners of the mattress and box spring with a flashlight. If you catch a bug, put it on clear tape and text us a photo. Fleas, carpet beetles, bat bugs and even spider beetles get mistaken for bed bugs.

How to prepare for bed bug treatment

Good preparation makes treatment work better. We'll give you a list for your home; these are the usual steps:

  • Strip the beds. Bag sheets, blankets, pillowcases and clothes from the affected rooms in sealed plastic bags.
  • Run bedding and clothing through a hot dryer, then keep them sealed until treatment is done.
  • Clear the floor around beds, couches and along baseboards so we can reach every edge.
  • Don't move furniture or belongings to other rooms or a friend's house β€” that spreads the bugs.
  • For heat treatment, set aside items that can't take heat: medicines, candles, aerosol cans, lighters, vinyl records, some electronics and plants. We'll go over the full list.
  • Plan for kids and pets to be out of the treated rooms for the time we tell you.

Don't spray before we come. Store sprays and foggers scatter bed bugs into walls and other rooms, which makes the job bigger and harder to finish.

Bed bugs in apartments: who pays, and what should landlords do?

Bed bugs travel between units through shared walls, outlets, pipe chases and hallways, so in a multi-unit building one apartment is rarely the whole story. Tenants should report bed bugs to the landlord or super in writing, with photos and dates, and not try to move furniture out through the halls.

Who pays for treatment depends on the building, the lease and local rules, which can change and differ by town. For the specifics, check with your town's code enforcement office or the NJ Department of Community Affairs. Our landlord vs. tenant pest guide covers the general picture.

For owners and managers, inspecting the units on each side, above and below costs less than treating the same building over and over. See our apartment building pest programs, and ask about bed bug prevention between tenants.

DIY bed bug treatments that waste money

πŸ’¨

Foggers and bug bombs

Don't reach the seams and cracks where bed bugs hide, and drive them deeper into walls and neighboring rooms.

πŸ§‚

Diatomaceous earth alone

Works slowly at best, gets spread too thick, and does nothing for bugs inside furniture and walls.

πŸ—‘οΈ

Throwing out the bed

A new mattress in an infested room gets infested again. Dragging the old one out can spread bugs on the way.

🧴

Rubbing alcohol and essential oils

Kill only the bugs they touch directly β€” and alcohol is a fire hazard. Eggs survive.

Encasements on the mattress and box spring are worth having, but they're a helper, not a cure.

Bed Bug Treatment Questions We Hear in New Jersey

How much does bed bug treatment cost in NJ?

There's no honest flat price, because cost depends on how many rooms are affected, the type of building, how long the bugs have been there and whether heat or chemical treatment fits best. A single bedroom caught early is a much smaller job than a whole apartment. We give a free quote after an inspection; call or text 973-510-2585.

Is heat treatment better than chemical treatment for bed bugs?

Neither is better in every case. Heat treatment can kill bugs and eggs in fewer visits and works well for heavy or cluttered rooms, while targeted chemical treatment can be a good fit for small, early problems. Sometimes we combine them. We'll recommend one after seeing the home and explain why.

How long does bed bug treatment take?

A heat treatment usually takes most of a day for the treated rooms, and you'll be out of the home during that time. Chemical treatment is usually a series of shorter visits spaced a couple of weeks apart so newly hatched bugs are caught. Either way, plan for follow-up checks before calling it done.

Do I have to throw away my mattress?

Usually not. Most mattresses and box springs can be treated and then covered with encasements. Throwing a mattress out often spreads bugs through the house or hallway, and a new mattress in an untreated room gets infested quickly. Ask us before you throw anything away.

Can I sleep in my bed during treatment?

In most cases, yes, once the treatment is done and we tell you it's safe to return. Keep sleeping in the same bed. Moving to the couch or another room tends to spread bed bugs to new areas and makes them harder to get rid of.

How did I get bed bugs?

Bed bugs travel on people and belongings, not because a home is dirty. Common sources are travel and hotels, used furniture, guests' luggage, and neighboring apartments in shared buildings. Anyone can get them, which is why early detection matters more than blame.

Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?

Small problems sometimes respond to careful laundering, vacuuming and encasements, but most DIY attempts fail because bed bugs and eggs hide in seams, cracks, outlets and furniture that sprays don't reach. Foggers often make it worse by scattering them. If you still see signs after a couple of weeks, get a professional inspection.

Do bed bugs spread disease?

Bed bugs aren't known to spread disease to people the way some other pests do, but the bites can itch badly, cause skin reactions and infections from scratching, and the stress and lost sleep are real. That's reason enough to treat them quickly.

Who pays for bed bug treatment in an apartment?

It depends on the lease, the building and local rules, which can differ by town and change over time. Report the problem to your landlord in writing right away. For specifics, check with your town's code enforcement office or the NJ Department of Community Affairs. Our landlord and tenant guide explains the general picture.

Is there a guarantee on bed bug treatment?

Ask us for your home. What follow-up visits are included depends on the treatment plan, and we explain it in your quote before any work starts. Our regular recurring service plans carry a 100% satisfaction guarantee, which is separate from a one-time bed bug treatment.
