Who does bat removal in Maywood, NJ?

Bats are protected, so we don't kill or trap them: we install one-way exclusion devices in the allowed season, after the young can fly, then seal every gap and clean up the guano.

Bat removal Maywood NJ: why bats move into these houses

The bats we find in Maywood homes are almost always big brown bats, with little brown bats now and then. They eat night-flying insects, and Maywood's tree-lined streets and nearby green space give them plenty to hunt. In the day they want a warm, tight, dark spot β€” and the attic of an older cape or colonial fits.

Bats don't chew. They use gaps that are already there, and they can squeeze through an opening about the width of a thumb. On Maywood houses we usually find them using:

  • Gable vents with loose or torn screens.
  • The ridge and roof returns, where trim has pulled away from the roof line.
  • Gaps behind fascia boards and gutters, and where siding meets the roof.
  • Chimney flashing and loose shutters.

In late spring, females gather in warm attics to have their young β€” a maternity colony. That's why the timing of bat work matters so much, and why sealing a hole yourself in summer can trap flightless pups inside.

A bat in your Maywood living room or bedroom: what to do

A single bat inside is usually a young one that took a wrong turn from the attic. Stay calm and follow these steps.

1

Close it in one room

Shut interior doors so it can't fly through the house, and keep kids and pets out.

2

Don't touch it bare-handed

Never pick up a bat without thick gloves. Bats can carry rabies, even though most don't.

3

Was someone asleep in the room?

If the bat was in a room with a sleeping person or a child, don't let it go β€” keep it contained and call the local health department about rabies testing.

4

Call us about the attic

One bat inside often means a colony in the attic or walls. We inspect and plan the exclusion.

Signs of bats in a Maywood attic or wall

SignWhat it looks like
Droppings (guano)Dark, rice-sized pellets that crumble to a sparkly powder; piles under the roost or stuck to siding below a gap
StainsBrown greasy smudges around a vent, gap or trim board where bats squeeze in
SoundsSqueaking or scratching in the wall or ceiling, especially around dusk
Bats at sunsetBats coming out of the roof line in a line, right after the sun goes down
SmellA strong ammonia-like odor in the attic from urine and guano

Count them at dusk from the yard if you can β€” it helps us plan. See signs of bats in your attic and how bats get into a house.

When bat exclusion is allowed in New Jersey

Time of yearExclusion?Why
April 1–30AllowedBats are back and active; no pups yet
May 1–July 31Not allowedMaternity season β€” pups can't fly and would be trapped
August 1–October 15AllowedYoung can fly and leave with the adults
October 16–March 31Only if an acoustic survey shows no batsBats may be hibernating inside and can't safely leave

These are the windows we work by; state rules can change, so we confirm before every job. During pup season we can still inspect, find the entry points, and book your exclusion for August. More on bat exclusion season in NJ.

How we remove bats from a Maywood house

1

Inspect the whole roof line

Ridge, gables, fascia, flashing, chimney and siding β€” every gap a bat could use, not only the one you saw.

2

Seal the small gaps first

We close the openings bats aren't using, leaving the main entries open.

3

Install one-way devices

Exclusion devices go on the active entries. Bats fly out at night to feed and can't get back in.

4

Confirm and close up

Once the bats are out, we remove the devices and seal those last openings. In the cold months, our acoustic survey checks first that no bats are left inside.

Bat guano cleanup in the attic

A colony that lived in the attic for a few seasons leaves guano in the insulation, on the framing and sometimes on top of the ceiling below. Old guano can grow a fungus linked to a lung illness called histoplasmosis, so it shouldn't be swept or vacuumed with a household vacuum.

After exclusion, we do the cleanup ourselves: HEPA cleanup, odor control, and removal and replacement of soiled attic insulation. Cleaning up also removes the smell that draws new bats to the same spot.

What affects the cost of bat removal in Maywood

FactorWhy it changes the price
Number of gaps to sealBats use the whole roof line; a full seal is what keeps them out
Roof height and pitchTwo-story gables and steep roofs need more time and equipment
Size of the colonyA large colony may need more devices and a longer wait to confirm
Guano cleanupInsulation removal and replacement is a separate part of the job
Time of yearCold-season work needs an acoustic survey first

Maywood bat questions

Who does bat removal in Maywood, NJ?

Silver Bullet Pest Control, based in Garfield about 10 to 15 minutes away. We're licensed by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife and hold NJ License 90568B. Call or text 973-510-2585.

Can you remove bats from my attic in June?

Not by exclusion β€” May through July is pup season, when young bats can't fly. We can inspect now and schedule the exclusion for August.

Do you kill or trap the bats?

No. Bats are protected and helpful. We use one-way devices so they leave on their own and then seal the house.

A bat flew around my bedroom while I slept. What should I do?

Don't let it go. Keep it contained in the room and call your local health department about rabies testing, then call us about the attic.

How do I know if I have bats or mice?

Bat droppings crumble into a sparkly powder and pile up under one spot; mouse droppings are harder and scattered. Bats also leave grease stains at the gap and fly out at dusk.

Can I just seal the hole myself?

Please don't. If bats or pups are inside, they get trapped, die in the walls or end up in your living space.

What is an acoustic bat survey?

We use a detector that picks up bat calls to check whether bats are still in or around the house. It's needed before cold-season exclusion work.

Do you clean up bat guano?

Yes. We do HEPA cleanup and odor control, and remove and replace soiled insulation.

Will bats come back after exclusion?

Not into the openings we sealed. They may look around the roof line for a while; a full seal of every gap is what keeps them out.

How much does bat removal cost in Maywood?

It depends on how many gaps there are, roof height, colony size and cleanup. The estimate is free.
