Bat Removal Cost in NJ: What Affects the Price of Bat Exclusion

Bat removal cost in NJ is set by your house, not by the number of bats. This guide explains what you're actually paying for, why two quotes for the same house can look so different, how New Jersey's bat seasons affect timing, and how to compare quotes without getting burned. No made-up price lists β€” just the real factors.

How much does bat removal cost in NJ?

Bat removal cost in NJ depends mainly on how many gaps on your house need to be sealed, how high and hard to reach they are, and whether droppings or insulation need cleanup β€” not on how many bats you have. A single bat flying in a bedroom is a small job; a colony in the attic means full exclusion of the whole house, which is the bigger cost. What you're really paying for: removal vs. exclusion

Most people search for "bat removal," but with a colony in the attic, nobody catches the bats one by one. The professional method is exclusion: every gap the bats could use is sealed except the ones they're actively using, and those get one-way devices. The bats leave at night to feed and can't get back in. Once they're all out, the devices come off and those last openings are sealed too.

That means the price is mostly labor and materials for sealing the house. Bats can squeeze through very small gaps, so a proper job covers the whole building, not just the one spot where you saw them come out. Sealing only one gap is a common reason bats show up again the next summer at a different corner of the roof.

If you want the full explanation of the two terms, read bat removal vs. bat exclusion: what's the difference.

What affects the cost of bat removal and exclusion

These are the factors that move a bat quote up or down. Your quote will be built from the ones that apply to your house:

FactorUsually a smaller jobUsually a bigger job
Number of gapsA few openings at one area of the roofGaps along ridge vents, soffits, fascia, chimney and siding all around the house
Height and accessOne-story or ranch; reachable with a ladderTall two- or three-family homes, steep roofs, dormers, hard-to-reach peaks
Roof and siding typeNewer roof, tight trimOlder homes with loose trim, gable vents, settled flashing and many roof lines
Bat situationOne bat that got into the living spaceAn established colony in the attic or walls
Droppings (guano)A few droppings near one entry pointPiles in the attic and soiled insulation
InsulationInsulation is cleanInsulation needs removal and replacement
TimingDuring an allowed exclusion windowBats present in the pup season, so work waits and the house must be checked again
Building typeSingle-family houseMulti-family, church, school or commercial building

The biggest single driver is usually the number and height of the gaps. That's why a fair quote needs someone to actually look at the house, or at least good photos of the roofline.

Three kinds of bat jobs (and why their costs differ)

Most bat calls in North Jersey fall into one of these:

Unfinished attic framing with exposed rafters
Most common

Colony in the attic

  • Scratching or squeaking at dusk
  • Droppings on insulation or the attic floor
  • Bats seen leaving the roofline at sunset

This is the full job: inspection, sealing the whole building, one-way devices, a check that the bats are gone, and final sealing. Cleanup may be added if there's a lot of guano. It's the largest of the three, but it's the one that actually solves the problem.

Urgent

One bat in the living space

  • A bat flying in a bedroom or hallway
  • Often at night in late summer
  • No signs of a colony yet

Getting one bat out is a short visit. The important part is finding out how it got in, because a single bat inside often means there are more in the attic or walls. If it was in a room with someone sleeping or a child, keep the bat for rabies testing and call your local health department.

Attic insulation being inspected
Add-on

Guano cleanup and insulation

  • Strong, musty smell in the attic
  • Droppings piled under the roof peak
  • Stained or packed-down insulation

After the bats are out, droppings and soiled insulation can be removed and the attic cleaned with HEPA equipment. We remove and replace attic insulation ourselves, so this can be done by the same crew that sealed the house.

How New Jersey bat seasons affect timing (and cost)

When the work can be done is part of the price conversation. In New Jersey, bat exclusion follows these windows:

Time of yearCan bats be excluded? What it means for you
April 1 – April 30YesA good time to seal up before bats raise young
May 1 – July 31No β€” pup seasonYoung bats can't fly yet. Sealing now would trap them inside. We inspect and plan, and the exclusion is scheduled for August.
August 1 – October 15YesThe busiest exclusion season, once the young can fly
October 16 – March 31Only after an acoustic survey shows no batsWe run acoustic bat surveys ourselves to confirm the house is empty before sealing

If you call in June, you're not stuck β€” we can inspect, give you a free quote and book the exclusion for the first allowed date. More on this in our NJ bat exclusion season guide.

Bat guano cleanup and insulation: when it adds to the cost

Not every bat job needs cleanup. A small colony caught early may leave only a few droppings near the entry. A colony that has used an attic for years can leave heavy guano on the insulation, a strong smell that comes through ceilings in hot weather, and stained wood.

Bat droppings can carry a fungus linked to histoplasmosis, so this isn't a job to do with a shop vac and a dust mask. A proper cleanup usually involves:

  • Protective gear and HEPA vacuums so dust doesn't spread into the house
  • Removing droppings and soiled insulation
  • Cleaning and treating for odor
  • Installing new insulation where the old material was removed

The cost of this part depends on the size of the attic and how much material has to come out. We do odor control, HEPA cleanup and attic insulation removal and replacement ourselves. See also bat guano cleanup and sanitation.

Cheap bat removal vs. doing it right

🚫

Sealing only one hole

The bats find another gap, sometimes one that leads into the living space instead of back outside.

β›”

Sealing in pup season

Young bats get trapped, die in the walls and cause a smell β€” and it can break New Jersey's rules on bat exclusion.

πŸ§ͺ

Sprays and repellents

Bats are protected, and repellents, mothballs and lights don't reliably move a colony. The bats come back.

πŸ”

No follow-up check

Without checking that every bat is gone before final sealing, a few can stay trapped inside.

A low quote that skips the whole-house seal or the follow-up usually means paying twice. Ask exactly what's included.

How to compare bat exclusion quotes

1

Ask what gets sealed

Is it the one entry point, or every gap on the building? Ridge vents, soffits, gable vents, chimney flashing and siding gaps should all be looked at.

2

Ask about timing

A good company will tell you if it's pup season and won't seal bats in. Ask how they confirm the bats are gone.

3

Ask about cleanup separately

Guano and insulation work should be listed on its own, so you know what you're paying for sealing vs. cleanup.

4

Check the license

Bat work in New Jersey involves protected wildlife. Silver Bullet is licensed by the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife and holds NJ License 90568B.

5

Ask what happens if a bat gets back in

Ask each company what they'll do if bats show up again after the job, and get the answer in writing.

How to get an accurate bat removal quote

The fastest way to a real number is to show us the house. Call or text 973-510-2585 and, if you can, send:

  • Photos of the front, back and sides of the house, including the roofline
  • Where you've seen bats or droppings (attic, wall, chimney, a bedroom)
  • Whether anyone woke up with a bat in the room
  • Your town and the type of home (single-family, two-family, multi-family)

From there we can set up a visit, inspect the outside and the attic, and give you a free quote that spells out the sealing, any cleanup and the timing. We're based in Garfield and serve Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties. Same-day visits are often available when a bat is loose in the house.

Bat Removal Cost Questions

How much does it cost to get rid of bats in an attic?

It depends on your house. The cost of getting rid of bats in an attic is mostly the work of sealing every gap on the building, so the number of openings, the height of the roof and any guano cleanup set the price. We give a free quote after looking at the home or good photos of it.

Why can't you give me a price over the phone?

Because two houses with the same number of bats can need very different amounts of work. One may have three gaps on a ranch roof, the other dozens of gaps on a tall three-family. Photos help us give a rough idea, and a short visit gives you a firm quote.

Is one bat in the house expensive to remove?

Removing a single bat from the living space is usually a quick visit. The bigger question is how it got in. If the inspection shows a colony in the attic or walls, you'll want an exclusion quote too, otherwise more bats may find their way inside.

Does homeowners insurance cover bat removal?

Policies vary, and many treat wildlife as a maintenance issue. Some may cover related damage, such as ruined insulation or drywall. Call your insurance company and ask before the work starts; we can describe the damage we find so you have details to share with them.

Why is bat exclusion more expensive than just sealing a hole?

Because bats move to another gap when one is closed. A proper exclusion checks and seals the whole building and uses one-way devices so the bats leave on their own. Patching one hole is cheaper upfront but often leads to a second call.

Can bat removal be done in the summer?

Inspection can, but exclusion can't be done from May 1 to July 31 in New Jersey, because young bats can't fly yet and would be trapped. Exclusion is allowed in April and from August 1 to October 15. In late fall and winter, it's done only after an acoustic survey shows no bats are present.

Does guano cleanup always add to the cost?

No. Small colonies found early may leave only a few droppings. Cleanup is added when droppings and soiled insulation have built up. In that case, we remove the material with HEPA equipment, treat for odor and replace the insulation.

How long does a bat exclusion take?

The sealing itself often takes a day or two on a typical house, depending on size and height. The one-way devices then stay up until the bats have all left, and the final openings are sealed after that check. Your quote will lay out the schedule.

Is it cheaper to do bat removal myself?

It may seem cheaper, but it's risky. Bats are protected, sealing at the wrong time is not allowed, and climbing a roof to find every gap is dangerous. Missed gaps or trapped bats usually cost more to fix than a proper job from the start.

Do you serve my town?

We're based in Garfield and serve Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties. We also take bat jobs in parts of Morris and Union counties; those visits are scheduled ahead. Call or text 973-510-2585 to check your town.
