Which fly do you have?

Five kinds of small flies cause almost every fly call we get from Saddle Brook. Each one breeds somewhere different:

FlyLooks likeWhere you see itWhere it breeds
Drain fly (moth fly)Tiny, fuzzy, moth-like wings held flat like a roofBathroom walls, near sinks, tubs and floor drainsThe slimy film inside drains and pipes
Fruit flySmall, tan, usually red eyesAround fruit, trash, recycling and the sinkOverripe fruit, spills, bottles and cans, damp mops
Fungus gnatTiny, dark, long legs, weak flyerAround houseplants and windowsWet potting soil
House flyGray, about a quarter-inch, four stripes on its backKitchens, doors, garbage areasGarbage, pet waste, rotting food outdoors
Cluster flyBigger and slower than a house fly, golden hairsSunny windows and attics in fall and on warm winter daysOutdoors in soil β€” they come inside to spend the winter

Seeing tiny flies near windows and finding dead ones on sills? Winged ants and termite swarmers get mixed up with flies too. When in doubt, send a photo.

Where flies breed in Saddle Brook homes

🚿

Drains you don't use

A basement shower, laundry sink, floor drain or guest bathroom that's rarely run builds up the film drain flies breed in.

🍌

Fruit, recycling and spills

One forgotten potato, a soda can in the recycling bin or a spill under the fridge can keep fruit flies going for weeks.

πŸͺ΄

Overwatered plants

Fungus gnats come from soggy potting soil, especially in winter when plants dry out slower.

πŸ—‘οΈ

Garbage and pet waste

House flies breed outside in trash cans, compost and dog waste, then come in through doors and torn screens.

The fly you see is only the adult. As long as the breeding spot is there, new ones keep hatching.

Drain fly exterminator: when the flies come from the drains

Drain flies are the fuzzy little flies that sit on the bathroom wall and barely move when you get close. They lay eggs in the gunk that lines drains, overflow holes and pipes β€” a mix of soap, hair, grease and bacteria. Pouring bleach down the drain usually doesn't help, because bleach rushes past the film without removing it.

A simple test: put a piece of clear tape over the drain opening (sticky side down, not fully sealed) overnight. If flies are stuck to it in the morning, that drain is a breeding spot. Test each drain in the house.

What fixes drain flies:

  • Scrubbing the film out of the drain, overflow and trap with a stiff drain brush
  • Cleaning or treating the drain with a product made to break down organic buildup, used as directed
  • Running water in unused drains every week so the traps don't dry out or build up
  • Looking under sinks, behind tubs and in the basement for leaks and standing water

If drain flies keep coming back after every drain is clean, the source may be hidden β€” a broken pipe under a slab, a leak inside a wall, or a damp spot under a floor drain. We'll show you what we find; pipe repairs go to a licensed plumber. More on our drain fly removal page.

Gnats exterminator: fruit flies vs. fungus gnats

Most people call any tiny flying bug a gnat, but in a Saddle Brook kitchen it's usually one of two different flies β€” and the fix is different for each:

  • Fruit flies hover around food and the sink. Throw out overripe produce, rinse bottles and cans before recycling, wipe up sticky spills, clean the garbage disposal, and replace damp sponges and mop heads. A small dish of cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap traps adults while you remove the source.
  • Fungus gnats hang around houseplants and windows. Let the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings, empty saucers under pots, and repot plants that stay soggy. Yellow sticky cards in the pots catch the adults.

If you've done all that and the gnats are still there, something is breeding that you haven't found yet β€” a drain, a bag of potatoes in the basement, a recycling bin in the garage, or moisture under a floor. That's what our inspection is for. More tips: preventing gnats in the home and how to get rid of fruit flies.

How we get rid of flies: inspection first

1

Identify the fly

We start by identifying exactly which fly you have, from a sample or a photo, because each kind breeds somewhere different.

2

Find the breeding source

We check drains, trash and recycling areas, pantry and produce storage, plants, basements, crawl spaces and the outside of the building.

3

Remove or treat the source

Cleaning out the breeding material is the real fix. Where it helps, we treat the source and the spots where adult flies rest.

4

Prevent the next round

We show you what to change β€” screens, door sweeps, trash storage, drain care β€” and check back if the flies don't stop.

Fly problems that go away and come back are almost always a breeding spot that was missed. Call us before you buy another can of spray.

Cluster flies: the slow flies at your windows every fall

If you see big, slow, buzzing flies gathering on the sunny side of the house in September and October, then turning up at upstairs windows on warm days all winter, those are probably cluster flies. Their young live in the soil as parasites of earthworms, so they're common around homes with lawns β€” which describes most of Saddle Brook's single-family neighborhoods.

In the fall the adults look for a sheltered place to spend the winter and crawl into attics, wall voids and window frames through tiny gaps. They don't breed inside the house and they don't spread disease the way house flies can, but they can show up by the dozens and they're hard to get rid of from the inside.

  • Vacuum them up as they appear β€” squashing them leaves stains.
  • Seal gaps around windows, siding, soffits and attic vents before late summer.
  • Outside treatment of the sunny walls where they gather, done in late summer, works better than anything inside.

Bug bombs and foggers don't reach a fly's breeding spot, so the flies come right back. Read more in how to get rid of flies in your house.

Fly control for Saddle Brook restaurants and businesses

For restaurants, bars, delis and food shops along Route 46 and around town, flies are more than an annoyance β€” customers notice them and health inspectors do too. New Jersey inspection placards are rated Satisfactory, Conditionally Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory, and fly activity counts. Commercial fly problems usually come from:

  • Floor drains, under-sink drains and soda-gun or bar drains with buildup
  • Mop sinks, damp mops and floor mats
  • Garbage and recycling areas, empty bottles and dumpster pads
  • Back doors that are propped open for deliveries

We inspect, show your staff where the flies are breeding, and set up a plan that fits your hours, with a written record of each visit. See our restaurant pest control page, and for roaches in the same kitchen, our Saddle Brook cockroach control page.

Fly & Gnat Questions from Saddle Brook

Do you have a flies exterminator for Saddle Brook, NJ?

Yes. Silver Bullet Pest Control handles drain flies, fruit flies, gnats, house flies and cluster flies in Saddle Brook, working from our base right next door in Garfield.

What's the fastest way to get rid of drain flies?

Scrub the slimy film out of the drain, overflow and trap, then keep the drain running. If flies keep coming back after every drain is clean, the source may be a hidden leak or broken pipe.

Why won't bleach get rid of drain flies?

Bleach flows past the buildup inside the pipe without removing it, so the eggs and larvae survive. The film has to be scrubbed or broken down.

How do I tell fruit flies from gnats?

Fruit flies are tan with red eyes and hang around food and the sink. Fungus gnats are dark with long legs and stay near houseplants and windows.

Will a bug bomb get rid of flies?

No. Foggers kill some adults but don't touch the breeding spot, so new flies keep hatching.

Why do I get big slow flies every fall?

Those are usually cluster flies looking for a place to spend the winter. Sealing gaps and treating the outside walls in late summer works best.

Do you treat flies in restaurants?

Yes. We find the breeding spots in drains, mop areas and trash areas, set a plan around your hours and keep a written record of every visit.

How long until the flies are gone?

Once the breeding source is removed, most small-fly problems drop off within a week or two, as the last adults die off.

Are you licensed?

Yes. Silver Bullet Pest Control holds NJ License 90568B and has over 15 years of experience.
