Preventing Gnats in the Home: What Works, and When to Call a Gnat Exterminator

Tiny flies around the fruit bowl, the sink or your houseplants? β€œGnats” is the word most people use for three or four different small flies, and each one breeds somewhere different. Find the breeding spot and the gnats stop. Here is how to tell them apart, how to prevent them, and when it makes sense to bring in a professional.

How do you prevent gnats in the home?

To prevent gnats in the home, take away the wet, fermenting or rotting material they breed in: keep ripe fruit in the fridge, rinse recycling, empty the trash often, clean the slime out of drains, and let houseplant soil dry between waterings. Traps only catch adults, so the gnats come back until the breeding spot is gone. If they keep returning after two to three weeks of that, a gnat exterminator can find the hidden source β€” often a drain, a leak or a broken pipe. Which β€œgnat” do you have?

Where you see them is the biggest clue. These are the four small flies behind most gnat calls in North Jersey homes:

🍌

Fruit flies

Tan body, often red eyes. They hover around fruit bowls, trash cans, recycling bins and anywhere sugary liquid has spilled β€” the bottom of a soda can is enough.

πŸͺ΄

Fungus gnats

Small, dark, slender and weak fliers. They walk on the soil of houseplants and drift up when you water. The larvae live in damp potting mix.

🚿

Drain flies

Fuzzy, moth-shaped and gray, with wings folded like a roof. They rest on bathroom walls and tub edges and breed in the slime film inside drains.

⚠️

Phorid flies

Humpbacked flies that run in short bursts. They breed in decaying organic material β€” sometimes a broken drain line or a sewer leak under a floor slab.

Gnat prevention checklist for your home

1

Store ripe produce in the fridge

Bananas, tomatoes, onions and potatoes are the classic starters. One forgotten potato in a pantry bag can produce a lot of fruit flies.

2

Rinse anything that held a drink

Cans, bottles and juice boxes go into the recycling bin rinsed. Keep the bin lidded and wash it now and then.

3

Take the trash out often

Especially in summer. Wipe up drips under the can liner, where gnats like to breed unseen.

4

Clean drains, not just sinks

Run a stiff drain brush down sinks, tubs and floor drains once a week if you've had gnats. Hair and soap scum feed the film drain flies need.

5

Dry out wet spots

Sponges, mops, dish racks, pet water bowls and plant saucers all hold water. Wring, dry and empty them.

6

Water plants less

Most houseplants are fine if the top inch or two of soil dries between waterings. Fungus gnat larvae die in dry soil.

These habits handle most gnat problems in one or two breeding cycles. If you see gnats in a room with none of these sources, that's a sign the breeding spot is hidden.

Gnats in houseplants: how to get rid of fungus gnats

Fungus gnats are the gnat most people find hardest to shake, because the adults you see are only part of the story. The larvae live in the top couple of inches of damp potting mix, feeding on fungi and decaying plant material. As long as the soil stays wet, they keep coming.

  • Let the soil dry. This one step does most of the work. Skip watering until the top inch or two is dry to the touch.
  • Water from the bottom. Set the pot in a tray of water for a short while so the roots drink and the surface stays drier. Empty the tray afterward.
  • Use yellow sticky cards. Stick one into each pot to catch adults and show you which plants are the problem.
  • Top-dress or repot. A thin layer of coarse sand or fine gravel on top of the soil makes it harder for adults to lay eggs. Badly infested plants may need fresh potting mix.
  • Check new plants. Gnats often arrive in the soil of a plant you just brought home. Keep new plants apart for a week or two.

Fungus gnats are a nuisance, not a health risk to people. Still, a heavy infestation can hurt seedlings and young roots. If you're also wondering whether your plants are attracting rodents, see are mice attracted to house plants.

Gnats coming from the drain

If the gnats are in the bathroom or near a basement floor drain, you're probably looking at drain flies. They breed in the slimy film that builds up on the inside of pipes and traps β€” not in the water itself. That's why pouring cleaner down the drain often doesn't work: the film stays put.

Quick test: tape a clear plastic cup upside down over the drain overnight, or cover it with tape, sticky side down. If you find small fuzzy flies stuck to it in the morning, that drain is the source.

What actually clears a drain: scrub the inside of the pipe with a long, stiff drain brush, then flush it with plenty of hot tap water. Repeat for several days. Don't count on bleach β€” it runs straight past the film. Floor drains, basement sinks and guest tubs that are rarely used can also dry out and let gases and flies come up; running water in them regularly helps.

Gnats and a sewer smell together? That can point to a cracked drain pipe or a sewer leak under the floor, where phorid flies breed. Cleaning won't fix that. Call a plumber to check the line, and call or text us at 973-510-2585 if the flies stay after the repair.

DIY gnat traps: what they can and can't do

MethodWorks onHonest verdict
Cider vinegar + a drop of dish soap in a cupFruit fliesCatches adults well; does nothing about the breeding spot
Paper cone over a jar with a bit of overripe fruitFruit fliesSame idea as vinegar; good for monitoring
Yellow sticky cards in potsFungus gnatsCatches adults and shows which plants are infested
Letting soil dry outFungus gnatsThe most effective step for houseplant gnats
Drain brush + hot waterDrain fliesEffective when repeated; pouring cleaner alone usually isn't
Bug zappers and room spraysMost gnatsKill a few adults; the next batch hatches anyway

Think of traps as a scoreboard: if the count keeps dropping, your prevention is working. If it holds steady after two to three weeks, there's a source you haven't found.

When to call a gnat exterminator

Most gnat problems are a cleaning job. These are the times a professional visit pays off:

πŸ”

They keep coming back

You've cleaned, dried and trapped for two to three weeks and the numbers aren't dropping.

πŸ•΅οΈ

No obvious source

Gnats in a bedroom, closet or basement with no fruit, plants or drain nearby β€” something hidden is wet or rotting.

🍽️

Restaurants and food businesses

Fruit flies and drain flies in a kitchen or bar can cause inspection problems. Floor drains, ice machines and soda lines are common sources.

🏒

Multi-unit buildings

In apartment buildings and two-family homes, gnats can breed in a shared line or another unit, so treating one kitchen doesn't solve it.

Food businesses can read more on restaurant pest control and commercial pest control.

What a professional gnat visit looks like

A good gnat exterminator spends most of the visit finding where the flies breed, because that's what decides the fix. When Silver Bullet Pest Control comes out for gnats or small flies, the visit usually looks like this:

  1. Identify the fly. Fruit fly, fungus gnat, drain fly or phorid fly β€” each points to a different kind of source.
  2. Find the breeding site. We check drains, garbage areas, under appliances, plant pots, damp basements and wall areas around leaks.
  3. Tell you what to clean or fix. Often the answer is a drain that needs scrubbing, a leak that needs a plumber, or produce storage that needs to change.
  4. Treat where it makes sense. Where a treatment will help, we use products labeled for that fly and that location, and we explain any precautions before we start.

We're based in Garfield and serve Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties. Same-day appointments are often available. For ongoing protection against gnats, ants, roaches and other pests, ask about our recurring home pest control, which comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Gnat Questions

What causes gnats in the house?

Gnats are caused by a wet, fermenting or rotting breeding spot: ripe fruit, sugary spills, damp potting soil, the slime inside drains, or a leak. Find and remove that spot and the gnats stop, because adults only live a short time.

How long does it take to get rid of gnats?

With the breeding source removed, most gnat problems drop off within one to three weeks as the remaining eggs and larvae finish their cycle. If you still see steady numbers after three weeks, the real source probably hasn't been found yet.

Are gnats harmful to people?

Fruit flies, fungus gnats and drain flies don't bite or sting. Fruit flies and drain flies can carry germs from trash and drains onto food and counters, so they're a sanitation problem, especially in kitchens and food businesses.

Why do I have gnats in my bathroom?

Gnats in the bathroom are usually drain flies breeding in the film inside a sink, tub or shower drain. Tape over each drain overnight to find the one they come from, then scrub it with a drain brush and hot water for several days.

Does vinegar get rid of gnats?

A cup of cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap traps fruit flies, but it doesn't get rid of them by itself. It catches adults while more hatch from the fruit or spill they came from, so you still need to remove that source.

How do I get rid of gnats in my plants without killing them?

Let the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings, water from the bottom, and use yellow sticky cards to catch adults. Fungus gnat larvae need damp soil, so drier soil breaks the cycle without hurting most houseplants.

Can bleach kill drain flies?

Bleach usually doesn't stop drain flies because it flows past the slime film they breed in. Scrubbing the inside of the pipe with a stiff drain brush and flushing with hot water works much better.

When should I call an exterminator for gnats?

Call when gnats keep coming back after two to three weeks of cleaning, when you can't find a source, when there's a sewer smell, or when it's a restaurant or apartment building. Those cases usually mean a hidden source that needs an inspection.

Do gnats come back in winter?

Fruit flies and drain flies can breed indoors all year, and houseplant gnats often get worse in winter when plants sit in damp soil near warm windows. Outdoors they slow down in the cold, but an indoor source keeps going.

Do you treat gnats in restaurants?

Yes, we handle small fly problems for food businesses in Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties. Call or text 973-510-2585 for a free quote.
