Carpenter Ants vs. Termites: How to Tell Who's Eating Your House

Both like wood. Both swarm with wings in spring. Both make homeowners say words we can’t print here. But one eats your house and one just rents it.

Quick answer: Carpenter ants have a pinched “waist”, elbowed antennae and front wings longer than the back ones; they leave smooth tunnels and piles of sawdust (frass). Termites have a thick waist, straight antennae and four equal wings; they leave mud tubes and wood packed with dirt. Termites eat wood — carpenter ants just move into it.

Side by side

Carpenter ant Termite
Waist Pinched, narrow Thick, straight
Antennae Elbowed (bent) Straight, beaded
Wings (swarmers) Front wings longer than back All four wings about the same, fall off easily
Color Usually black or red-and-black, large Workers pale/cream; swarmers dark
Damage Smooth, clean tunnels Rough tunnels packed with mud and dirt
Clues Piles of sawdust (frass) with insect parts Mud tubes on foundations, piles of shed wings
Do they eat wood? No — they chew it to nest Yes

What to do if you see swarmers inside

  1. Save a few in a sealed bag or photo them up close.
  2. Look for sawdust piles (ants) or mud tubes (termites).
  3. Check for damp wood — leaks around windows, roofs, decks and bathrooms.
  4. Call for an inspection. Both mean a colony is nearby, possibly inside the structure.
Don’t spray swarmers and call it done. Swarmers are a sign, not the problem. The colony is somewhere else.

Common questions

How can I tell carpenter ants from termites?

Carpenter ants have a pinched waist, bent antennae and uneven wings; termites have a thick waist, straight antennae and four equal wings.

Do carpenter ants eat wood?

No. They chew tunnels in damp or soft wood to nest and push out sawdust called frass.

Are flying ants a sign of termites?

Not always — they may be ant swarmers. Either way, swarmers indoors mean a colony nearby, so get an inspection.

What does carpenter ant damage look like?

Smooth, clean tunnels in wood and small piles of sawdust with insect parts.
