Need ant control in Haworth?

Call Silver Bullet Pest Control at 973-510-2585 for ant control in Haworth, NJ: we identify the species, find the nest — often in damp wood, under mulch or along the foundation — and treat the colony with baits and targeted treatments instead of just spraying the trail. Same-day visits are often available, and we tell you the price before any work starts.

Why Haworth homes get so many ants

Haworth is a small, mostly residential borough in Bergen County's Northern Valley, with the Oradell Reservoir along its western side. Most homes are single-family houses on generous, tree-covered lots. That's a big part of why people live here — and it's also exactly what ants like:

  • Mature trees close to the house. Carpenter ants nest in old trees, dead limbs and stumps, then follow branches that touch the roof or gutters to get inside.
  • Damp wood. Shaded roof edges, clogged gutters, leaky window frames, older decks and porch posts stay wet. Carpenter ants dig their galleries in wood that's already softened by moisture.
  • Mulch and landscaping. Thick mulch beds and stone edging against the foundation hold moisture and give odorous house ants and pavement ants a place to nest right next to the walls.
  • Woodpiles and leaf litter. Firewood stacked against the house or under a deck is a common carpenter ant nest site.
  • Older homes with basements. Gaps around pipes, sill plates and basement windows let ants walk in when they're looking for food and water.

Living near woods and water doesn't mean you have to live with ants. It means the treatment has to reach the nest, and that a few changes around the outside of the house make a real difference.

Which ants are in your Haworth home?

Different ants need different treatments. Here are the ones we find most often in North Jersey homes.

Most damaging

Carpenter ants

  • Large black ants, often seen at night
  • Small piles of sawdust-like material (frass)
  • Faint rustling inside walls or wood

They don't eat wood, but they hollow it out to nest, usually where it's damp. We find the main nest and any satellite nests in the house and treat both.

Kitchen ants

Odorous house ants

  • Small dark ants in long trails
  • A rotten-coconut smell when crushed
  • Trails to sweets, sinks and pet bowls

The most common kitchen ant. Colonies have many queens, so spraying the trail just splits them. Slow-acting baits carried back to the nest work much better.

Driveways & patios

Pavement ants

  • Little piles of sand between pavers or along the driveway
  • Ants coming up through slab cracks
  • Trails along baseboards in the basement

They nest under walkways, patios and slabs and come inside for food. We treat the nest areas outside and bait the indoor trails.

Pharaoh ants

  • Very small, light yellow or reddish ants
  • Trails in bathrooms and kitchens, even in winter
  • Ants around outlets and cabinet edges

They live indoors in warm spots. Sprays make the colony split into new ones, so we use baits only and follow up.

Field & mound ants

  • Mounds in the lawn or garden beds
  • Ants along the foundation in summer
  • Winged ants on warm days

Usually an outdoor nuisance, but they can come in through foundation gaps. A perimeter treatment and a little landscaping change keeps them outside.

Winged ants or termites?

  • Ants: pinched waist, bent antennae
  • Termites: straight waist, straight antennae
  • Termite wings are equal length and fall off easily

Both swarm in spring. If you're not sure what you found, save one in a bag or send a photo. If it's termites, we'll set up an inspection.

Carpenter ant damage in Haworth: what to check

Carpenter ants are the ant we're asked about most in wooded towns like Haworth. They're large — most workers are a quarter inch to a half inch long — and usually black or black and red. They're most active at night, so many homeowners first notice them in spring when a few show up on the kitchen floor in the morning.

Signs of a carpenter ant nest in the house:

  • Small piles of frass — coarse sawdust mixed with insect parts — under windows, in the basement or attic, or below deck boards.
  • Winged ants coming out of a wall or ceiling in late winter or spring. A swarm indoors means the colony is mature and living inside.
  • Ants seen inside regularly in winter, which means a nest is in the heated part of the house.
  • Faint rustling inside a wall or hollow-sounding wood.

How it differs from termites: carpenter ants push frass out of their tunnels and leave smooth, clean galleries; termites leave mud and soil inside the wood and build mud tubes on foundation walls. Both need moisture, so a leak or rotting wood is often the starting point either way. If we find termite signs during an ant visit, we'll tell you and can do a full termite inspection.

Fixing the moisture — gutters, a leaking window, a deck post sitting in soil — is part of the solution. We'll point out what we find so you or your contractor can repair it.

How our ant exterminators treat a Haworth home

1

Identify the ant

Carpenter, odorous house, pavement or pharaoh ants each need a different plan, so we confirm the species first.

2

Find the nest

We follow trails, check damp wood, the roofline, decks, trees and mulch beds, and look for frass, so we treat where the colony actually lives.

3

Price before work

We explain what we found and give you the price before anything is treated.

4

Treat the colony

Baits the workers carry back to the queen, non-repellent treatments around the foundation, and direct treatment of carpenter ant nests in wall voids or wood where needed. Placed safely away from children and pets.

5

Cut off access

We point out branches touching the roof, wet wood and gaps, and seal entry points where it makes sense.

6

Follow up

Ant baits take time to reach the whole colony. We check back and adjust until the ants are gone.

Haworth Ant Control FAQ

Do you offer ant control in Haworth, NJ?

Yes. We treat homes throughout Haworth and the rest of the Northern Valley in Bergen County. Call or text 973-510-2585.

Can you come the same day?

Often, yes. Call early in the day and we'll give you the first open time.

Why do I keep getting carpenter ants every spring?

There's usually a nest in or near the house — in damp wood, a tree, a stump or a woodpile — that was never treated. Spraying the ants you see doesn't reach it. We find the nest and treat it, and point out the moisture or branches that let them in.

Are carpenter ants as bad as termites?

They don't eat wood like termites, but they hollow it out to nest, and over years that can weaken window frames, sills and deck posts. It's worth treating them early.

Should I spray the ant trail?

Not with a household spray. For many species it kills a few workers and makes the colony split into more nests. Wipe the trail with soapy water and let us bait and treat the colony.

Is ant treatment safe for kids and pets?

Yes, when done right. Baits go in places children and pets can't reach, outdoor treatments are targeted, and we explain everything before we leave.

How long does it take to get rid of ants?

Most kitchen ant problems drop off within days of baiting, but it can take a couple of weeks for bait to reach the whole colony. Carpenter ants depend on how many nests there are. We follow up until they're gone.

How much does ant control cost?

It depends on the type of ant, how many nests there are and the size of the property. We give a free quote and tell you the price before any work starts.

Do we have fire ants in New Jersey?

Red imported fire ants are not established in New Jersey. Some native ants can sting or bite, though. If you're being stung in your yard, send us a photo and we'll identify it.

Will cutting back trees help?

Yes. Branches touching the roof are a highway for carpenter ants. Keeping branches trimmed back from the house, gutters clear and firewood away from the walls makes a big difference.
