Does Pine-Sol Keep Mice Away? Clean Floors, Unbothered Mice

It’s a fair question. Pine-Sol smells strong enough to make you leave the room. Surely a mouse would pack its bags? Unfortunately, mice are tougher than that.

Quick answer: No, Pine-Sol doesn’t keep mice away. Cleaning helps a little because it removes crumbs and the scent trails mice follow, but the smell itself won’t stop them. Sealing their entry points does.

Why people think it works

Mice leave tiny urine trails to find their way back to food. A good scrub removes those trails and the crumbs they were after, so for a few days the kitchen is less interesting. That’s the cleaning working — not the pine smell.

Other “smells mice hate” — the scorecard

Smell Keeps mice away?
Pine-Sol ❌ Cleans up after them; doesn’t repel them
Peppermint oil ❌ Fades fast; mice get used to it
Dryer sheets ❌ Mice have been seen nesting in them
Vinegar ❌ Same as Pine-Sol — good cleaner, bad bouncer
Bleach ❌ Useful for disinfecting droppings, not for repelling
Mothballs ❌ Not labeled for this and harmful to breathe
Never mix cleaners — especially bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. The fumes are dangerous. And when cleaning mouse droppings, wet them first with disinfectant and wipe them up; don’t sweep or vacuum dry droppings.
