Pharaoh Ant Control in Millburn & Short Hills, NJ

Tiny yellowish ants in the kitchen in January, trailing out of an outlet or along the bathroom grout, and every spray makes it worse? That's the classic sign of pharaoh ants. Silver Bullet Pest Control identifies the ant correctly and uses a slow bait program that takes out the whole colony instead of splitting it into more.

How do you get rid of pharaoh ants in Millburn, NJ?

Pharaoh ants are removed with slow-acting baits placed where the workers are trailing, not with sprays, because sprays and cleaners make the colony split into several new nests. The workers carry the bait back and share it with the queens and young until the colony dies out, which usually takes several weeks. Silver Bullet Pest Control identifies the ant, sets up a bait program for homes, apartments and businesses in Millburn and Short Hills, and comes back to check and adjust. Is it a pharaoh ant? The small ants we see most

Several tiny ants look alike to the naked eye. Getting the ID right matters, because the treatment is different:

A group of small ants close up
Indoor ant

Pharaoh ants

  • Very tiny, about 1/16 inch
  • Pale yellow to light brown, darker rear end
  • Inside year-round, even in winter

Pharaoh ants live inside heated buildings, nesting in wall voids, behind baseboards, under cabinets, inside appliances and even in folded linens. They trail along pipes, wires and grout lines and show up in kitchens and bathrooms. One building can hold many nests with many queens.

Small dark ants gathered together
Most common in NJ

Odorous house ants

  • Small, dark brown to black
  • Rotten-coconut smell when crushed
  • Long trails after rain or in dry spells

These are the ants most North Jersey homeowners call "sugar ants." They nest outside under mulch, stones and slabs and come in for sweets and water. Like pharaoh ants, they split into new colonies when sprayed.

Much bigger

Carpenter ants

  • Large, black or black-and-red
  • Seen one or a few at a time
  • Sawdust-like shavings near wood

Carpenter ants aren't tiny trailers; they're the big ants that nest in damp wood. If what you see is large, it's a different problem with a different treatment.

Why sprays and cleaners make pharaoh ants worse

A pharaoh ant colony has many queens. When a nest is stressed by a spray, a repellent, or a strong cleaner wiped along the trail, groups of workers carry young and a queen off to start a new nest somewhere else. This is called budding. One colony in the kitchen becomes three or four colonies in the kitchen, the bathroom and the wall behind the dishwasher.

  • Don't spray the trail with store insecticides or repellent sprays.
  • Don't flood the area with cleaner right before or during treatment; a light wipe of crumbs is fine.
  • Don't use foggers. They don't reach the nests and they scatter the ants.
  • Do note where you see them, take photos and leave the trail alone until the bait is in place.

This is the single biggest reason pharaoh ant problems drag on for months: well-meaning DIY treatment keeps splitting the colony.

Where pharaoh ants show up in Millburn and Short Hills

Pharaoh ants need warmth, moisture and food, and they travel inside the building, not across the yard. In Millburn and Short Hills we see them in:

  • Apartments and condos near downtown Millburn, where ants move between units through plumbing chases, wiring and shared walls.
  • Large single-family homes with multiple bathrooms, kitchen islands with plumbing, radiant floor heat or heated mudrooms, all warm, hidden spaces.
  • Restaurants, cafΓ©s and food shops on Millburn Avenue and the downtown streets, where deliveries and warm equipment give them food and shelter.
  • Offices and medical offices, where ants nest in break rooms, under sinks and inside walls near hot water lines.

Pharaoh ants are usually carried in, in boxes, grocery deliveries, furniture or luggage, rather than walking in from the yard. So they can appear in a spotless house any time of year.

How we get rid of pharaoh ants

1

Confirm the ant

We identify the species and find where the trails run: outlets, pipes, cabinet corners, window frames, baseboards.

2

Place slow baits

Baits go right on the trails and near hidden entry points. Workers carry them back to share with queens and young in every nest.

3

Leave them alone

For a while you may see more ants on the bait. That's a good sign; it means they're taking it home. No sprays or harsh cleaners near the bait.

4

Follow up

We come back to check activity, refresh bait and treat any new trails until the colonies are gone. Multi-unit buildings may need nearby units checked too.

Pharaoh ants take patience: expect several weeks, not a single visit. Ongoing problems in a building do best on regular service, which comes with our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

What about Argentine ants?

Argentine ants are small brown ants that form huge outdoor colonies and march into houses in long, busy trails. They're a well-known pest in warmer parts of the country, and less common in North Jersey than odorous house ants and pavement ants, which are often mistaken for them.

The good news is that the right approach is similar either way:

  • Bait, don't spray. Argentine ants and odorous house ants also split and scatter when sprayed.
  • Work outside too. These ants nest in mulch, under stones and along foundations, so we follow the trail back outside and treat there.
  • Cut off moisture. Leaky outdoor faucets, irrigation and damp mulch beds keep colonies close to the house.

Seeing ant trails from the yard rather than ants appearing inside the walls? That points away from pharaoh ants. Text us a photo and we'll sort it out. More: Argentine ants in Wanaque.

What you can do while treatment works

🍯

Tidy, don't scrub

Wipe up sticky spills and crumbs, store sweets, pet food and honey sealed. Skip bleach and strong cleaners along the trails.

πŸ’§

Fix drips

Leaky faucets, sweating pipes and wet sponges give pharaoh ants water.

πŸ“Έ

Note new trails

Tell us where new ants appear between visits; it helps us place bait where it's needed.

🏒

Tell the building

In an apartment or condo, let management know. Ants in your unit often come from a neighbor's.

Pharaoh Ant Questions from Millburn

How do I know if I have pharaoh ants?

Pharaoh ants are very tiny, pale yellow to light brown, and show up indoors any time of year, often trailing along pipes, outlets and grout. Text us a close-up photo to confirm.

Why did spraying make my ant problem worse?

Pharaoh ants have many queens, and sprays make the colony split into new nests in other parts of the building. That's why slow baits work and sprays don't.

How long does it take to get rid of pharaoh ants?

Usually several weeks with follow-up visits, depending on how far they've spread. Larger buildings can take longer.

Do pharaoh ants cause damage?

They don't damage wood like carpenter ants or termites. The problem is contamination: they get into food, and in medical settings they're a hygiene concern.

Are Argentine ants common in New Jersey?

They're less common here than odorous house ants and pavement ants, which are often mistaken for them. Either way, baiting works better than spraying.

Where do pharaoh ants come from?

They usually arrive inside boxes, deliveries, furniture or luggage, and then spread through warm walls, pipes and wiring.

I live in a condo. Do you need to treat other units?

Often yes. Pharaoh ants move between units, so we may recommend checking nearby units and talking with the building manager.

Do you work with restaurants and offices in Millburn?

Yes. We can schedule around your hours and keep a record of each visit.

Do you come to Millburn and Short Hills?

Yes, we serve Millburn and Short Hills. It's a longer drive from our Garfield base, so we usually book visits ahead.

Are you licensed?

Yes. NJ License 90568B, with over 15 years of experience.
