Do I need a termite inspection in New Jersey?

Yes, if you see swarmers, mud tubes, discarded wings or soft wood, or if you're buying or selling a house. New Jersey's main termite, the eastern subterranean termite, lives in the soil and comes up through the foundation, so damage often stays hidden until it's serious. A licensed inspection checks the basement, crawl space, sill plates and outside of the house and tells you if termites are active. Silver Bullet Pest Control is a licensed termite exterminator for Bergen, Passaic and Essex County — termite inspections, WDI reports and treatment. Call 973-510-2585.

Signs of termites in a New Jersey home

Most people never see a termite until the spring swarm. These are the signs that show up first:

Subterranean termites working inside damaged wood
Live termites

Swarmers & Discarded Wings

  • Small dark winged insects near windows or lights in spring
  • Piles of identical see-through wings on sills
  • Swarm comes from inside the house, not the yard

A swarm indoors means a mature colony is feeding in or under the house. Save a few in a bag or snap a photo — that helps us confirm it's termites and not flying ants.

Mud Tubes on the Foundation

  • Pencil-wide brown tubes on block or concrete walls
  • Tubes along sill plates, piers or pipes
  • Tubes that come back after you scrape them off

Subterranean termites build these mud tunnels to travel from the soil to the wood without drying out. Fresh tubes usually mean an active colony.

Soft, Hollow or Damaged Wood

  • Baseboards or trim that sound hollow when tapped
  • Paint that bubbles or wood that crumbles
  • Doors and windows that suddenly stick

Termites eat wood from the inside out and leave the surface looking normal. We probe and tap the wood and, when needed, use thermal imaging and TermaTrac to check behind walls.

Termites vs. flying ants — and which termites live in NJ

Swarming termites and flying ants show up at the same time of year. Here's how to tell them apart:

Termite swarmerFlying ant
WaistThick, straight waistPinched, narrow waist
AntennaeStraight, bead-likeBent at an elbow
WingsTwo pairs, same length, fall off easilyFront pair longer than back pair
Where you see themNear windows, doors, basements, lights — often in springKitchens, outside walls, around nests
What it meansA colony is feeding in or under the structureCould be an ant nest — carpenter ants also damage wood

In North Jersey, almost every termite job involves the eastern subterranean termite. It nests in the soil and needs moisture, so it comes in where wood touches soil or through cracks and gaps in the foundation. Drywood termites are rare here. What our termite inspection covers

🧱

Outside the house

We walk the foundation line looking for mud tubes, wood touching soil, mulch piled against siding, leaks and wet spots, and gaps around pipes and wires.

🔦

Basement & crawl space

Sill plates, joists, beams, support posts and the spots where pipes and drains come through the slab — where subterranean termites usually start.

🌡️

Thermal & TermaTrac

When the visual check isn't enough, thermal imaging and TermaTrac help us look for moisture and movement behind walls and ceilings without cutting into them.

WDI termite reports for home sales and refinances

A WDI (wood destroying insect) inspection checks a house for termites and other wood-destroying insects and documents what's found. In New Jersey it's commonly asked for when you buy or sell a house, refinance, or when an attorney or lender needs it for the closing — some VA and FHA loans require one.

We schedule WDI inspections quickly, inspect the inside and outside of the house, and give you a clear written report. If we find activity or damage, we explain the options and can schedule treatment fast so the closing stays on track.

Buying a house? Ask for the WDI inspection early in your attorney review or inspection period. If termites need treatment, there's still time to work it into the deal.

When termites swarm in New Jersey

🌱

Spring (March–May)

Swarm season. Swarmers usually come out on warm, sunny days after rain. This is when most people first find out they have termites.

☀️

Summer

Colonies are feeding hard. Mud tubes are easier to spot, and moisture from leaks and AC lines draws termites in.

🍂

Fall

Feeding continues. A good time for a check before winter, especially if you saw swarmers in spring.

❄️

Winter

Termites don't stop — they move deeper into the soil, but in heated basements and near warm pipes they can keep feeding. Are termites active in winter?

How to make your house less attractive to termites

  • Keep wood off the soil. Firewood, lumber and old boxes in the basement or against the house are an open invitation.
  • Pull mulch back a few inches from the foundation, and don't let soil build up against siding.
  • Fix moisture problems. Leaky pipes, AC condensate lines, clogged gutters and downspouts that empty against the house keep the soil wet.
  • Seal gaps where pipes, wires and utility lines go through the foundation.
  • Watch older porches, decks and additions — wood that touches the ground or is built close to the soil is where we find termites most often.
  • Get an inspection if your house has never had one, or if it's been years since the last treatment.

Don't spray swarmers with store-bought bug spray and call it done. The swarmers you see are a small part of the colony; the rest stays in the soil and keeps feeding.

Termite Inspection & Treatment FAQ

How do I know if I have termites?

The most common signs in New Jersey are swarmers or piles of wings inside in spring, mud tubes on the foundation or basement walls, and wood that sounds hollow or crumbles. An inspection confirms it.

Are termites common in New Jersey?

Yes. The eastern subterranean termite is found throughout North Jersey, and older homes with basements, porches and wood close to the soil are at higher risk.

What do you check during a termite inspection?

The foundation line outside, the basement or crawl space, sill plates, joists, beams, garage framing and the spots where pipes come through — plus moisture problems that attract termites.

What is a WDI inspection?

A wood destroying insect inspection that checks a home for termites and other wood-destroying insects and documents the results. It's commonly needed for home sales, refinances and some VA and FHA loans.

What's the difference between a termite and a flying ant?

Termite swarmers have a thick waist, straight antennae and two pairs of wings the same length. Flying ants have a pinched waist, bent antennae and front wings longer than the back ones.

Do you offer a warranty on termite treatment?

Yes. Termite treatment from Silver Bullet Pest Control comes with a 90-day warranty.

Which is better, liquid treatment or bait stations?

It depends on the house. Liquid treatment stops active termites quickly; bait stations work well where drilling is hard and for long-term monitoring. We recommend one after the inspection.

Are termites active in winter?

Yes. They slow down outside, but in heated homes and near warm pipes they can keep feeding all winter.

Should I spray the swarmers myself?

Spraying kills the swarmers you can see, but the colony in the soil keeps feeding. Call for an inspection so the colony itself gets treated.

How do I choose a termite treatment company?

Pick a licensed New Jersey pest control company that inspects before quoting, explains whether it recommends liquid treatment or bait stations and why, puts the warranty in writing, and can do WDI reports if you're selling. Silver Bullet Pest Control is licensed in NJ (License 90568B).

Do you have a termite inspector in Bergen County?

Yes. We're based in Garfield and inspect homes across Bergen County, plus Passaic and Essex counties — for termite problems, home sales and refinances.

Can you fix termite damage?

Yes. Once the termites are treated, we can repair damaged sill plates, joists and trim.

¿Hacen inspecciones de termitas en español?
