How do I get rid of a wasp or hornet nest safely in New Jersey?

The safest way is to stay away from the nest and have a licensed exterminator treat it, because yellow jackets and hornets defend their nests in large numbers and a missed spray or a knocked-down nest usually sets off the whole colony. A professional first identifies the insect, then treats the nest opening with the right product, removes the nest when it's safe to do so, and checks that activity has stopped. Silver Bullet Pest Control handles bee and wasp removal across Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties, with a one-time service or a 30, 60 or 90-day warranty depending on the species. The stinging insects we remove most in North Jersey

The nest usually tells you more than the insect does. These are the three calls we get the most from late spring to the first frost:

Paper wasp nest with open six-sided cells hanging from a surface
Paper wasps

Umbrella Nests Under Eaves & Railings

  • Gray, open-celled nest shaped like an upside-down umbrella
  • Under eaves, porch ceilings, deck rails, grill covers and mailboxes
  • Slender wasps with long legs hanging below them in flight

Paper wasps are the least aggressive of the group, but nests by a door, a playset or a deck get bumped — and that's when people get stung. Small nests are quick to treat; we also look for others on the same house.

Large gray paper hornet nest built around a tree branch
Hornets

Football-Shaped Nests in Trees & Shrubs

  • Gray paper ball, often bigger than a basketball by late summer
  • High in trees, inside hedges, or on the side of a house or shed
  • Black-and-white insects — usually bald-faced hornets

Bald-faced hornets defend a wide area around the nest and will chase. Never try to cut down the branch or hose the nest. We treat it so the colony dies off, then remove the nest when it's safe.

Cracks and gaps in a house exterior where insects can get into wall voids
Yellow jackets

Holes in the Lawn, Walls & Siding

  • Steady traffic in and out of one small hole in the grass
  • Wasps going behind siding, trim, a vent or a crack in the foundation
  • Bees chewing or buzzing inside a wall or ceiling

Yellow jackets hide their nests underground or inside walls, so you see the traffic, not the nest. They're the stinger behind most bad summer and fall encounters. Don't plug the hole — they'll chew a new way out, sometimes indoors.

Wasp, hornet, yellow jacket or bee? A quick comparison

Treatment depends on what you have — and some of them shouldn't be killed at all. Here's how the common ones compare:

LookNestTemperWhat we usually do
Paper waspSlim, brown or black with yellow marks, long dangling legsOpen gray comb, no cover, under overhangsCalm unless the nest is touchedTreat and remove the nest; check the rest of the house
Yellow jacketStocky, bright yellow and black, fast and jerky flightHidden — in the ground, walls, attics, shedsVery defensive, worst in late summer and fallTreat the nest at the entrance; walls may need extra steps
Bald-faced hornetLarger, black with white face and markingsCovered gray paper ball in trees, shrubs, on buildingsVery defensive, will chaseTreat the colony, then take the nest down
HoneybeeFuzzy, golden-brown, smaller than a yellow jacketWax comb in a hollow tree or wall; spring swarms on branchesGentle when swarming, defends an established hiveTalk through options first — honeybees are valuable pollinators
Carpenter beeBig, shiny black bare abdomenRound holes drilled into woodMales hover and bluff; rarely stingTreat the galleries and seal them — see carpenter bee control

Not sure what you're looking at? Text a photo to 973-510-2585 from a safe distance. For honeybee swarms we may point you toward local beekeepers first. For the big black bees boring holes in your deck, see carpenter bee control. And if huge wasps are digging holes in sandy spots in July, those are probably cicada killers.

Ground bees, yellow jackets in the lawn and wasps inside walls

Most people who call about “ground bees” in North Jersey actually have yellow jackets. They take over old rodent burrows and hollow spots under stones, tree roots and landscape timbers, and the colony keeps growing all summer. By August and September a single ground nest can hold thousands of workers — and the first person to run a mower over it finds out the hard way.

A smaller number of ground-nesting bees are true solitary bees. They make many tiny holes in bare soil in spring, rarely sting, and are gone in a few weeks. The difference matters, so we look before we treat.

Wall and ceiling nests are the other big one. Yellow jackets and sometimes honeybees get in through gaps in siding, soffits, vents, chimneys and around pipes. If you hear buzzing or chewing inside a wall, or see wasps showing up indoors near lights and windows, the nest is probably in a void right behind them.

Don't caulk or tape the hole shut. A trapped yellow jacket colony will chew through drywall or ceiling paint looking for another exit — often into the living space. Leave the entrance open and call us; we treat through the opening and seal it afterward.

How bee and wasp removal works

1

Call or text

Tell us where the nest is, how high up, and whether anyone in the house is allergic. A photo from a safe distance helps a lot.

2

Identify & plan

On site we confirm the species, find the nest entrance and check for other nests on the property — there's often more than one.

3

Treat the nest

We use protective gear and the right product for the job — dust, liquid or aerosol — applied directly into the nest or entrance, where it reaches the colony.

4

Remove & follow up

Exposed nests come down once activity stops. Stragglers returning for a day or two is normal; if activity keeps up within your warranty window, we come back and re-treat.

How much does wasp nest removal cost?

There's no single price for wasp, hornet or bee removal because no two nests are the same. When you call, we'll ask a few questions and give you a clear quote before any work starts. These are the things that change the price:

  • Species. A small paper wasp nest under a railing is a quick job. A mature yellow jacket or hornet colony takes more time, more product and more care.
  • Where the nest is. Ground level and in reach is simplest. Roof peaks, second-story eaves, chimneys and tall trees need ladders and extra safety steps.
  • Inside a wall, ceiling or attic. Hidden nests take longer to locate and may need treatment through the entrance plus sealing afterward.
  • Size and number of nests. Late-summer colonies are much bigger than spring ones, and many houses have several nests at once.
  • Timing. Same-day and after-hours emergency calls are different from a scheduled visit.
  • Warranty choice. A one-time service or a 30, 60 or 90-day warranty, depending on the species.

For a quick estimate, text a photo and the address to 973-510-2585. Landlords and businesses with several buildings can ask about commercial pest control that covers stinging insects with the rest of the service.

What to do until we get there

  • Keep people and pets away from the nest — at least several yards for hornets and yellow jackets. Close nearby windows and doors.
  • Don't spray, swat, burn, flood or knock down the nest. Store-bought sprays rarely reach the queen and the core of the colony, and an angry nest is much harder to treat.
  • Hold off on mowing, trimming hedges or power-washing near the nest. Vibration and noise set off ground nests.
  • Don't seal the entrance of a wall or ground nest.
  • Cover food and drinks outside. Yellow jackets go after sweet drinks, fruit and meat in late summer.
  • Know the warning signs of an allergic reaction — swelling of the face or throat, trouble breathing, dizziness. That's a 911 call, not a pest control call.

If a nest is right by an entrance, a play area, or a business door and someone has already been stung, use our 24/7 emergency bee removal line: 973-510-2585.

Bee & Wasp Removal FAQ

Do you remove wasp and hornet nests in Bergen County?

Yes. We're based in Garfield and remove wasp, hornet, yellow jacket and bee nests across Bergen County, plus Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties.

How much does wasp nest removal cost?

It depends on the species, how big the nest is, how high or hidden it is, how many nests there are and whether it's an emergency call. Text a photo and your address to 973-510-2585 and we'll give you a quote before any work starts.

Do you offer a warranty on bee and wasp removal?

Yes. You can choose a one-time service or a 30, 60 or 90-day warranty depending on the species, and if activity comes back within that window we re-treat.

What are ground bees?

In North Jersey, most so-called ground bees are yellow jackets nesting in old burrows in the lawn or garden. They're defensive and should be treated by a professional, especially before mowing.

Can I just spray the nest myself?

You can, but store-bought sprays often miss the core of the colony, and a stirred-up nest of yellow jackets or hornets can sting many times. For anything bigger than a small paper wasp nest, or anything hidden, call a pro.

Should I seal the hole where wasps are going into my wall?

No. A trapped colony can chew its way into the house. Leave the hole open until the nest has been treated, then seal it.

What does a hornet nest look like?

A bald-faced hornet nest is a gray, papery ball or football shape with a single opening near the bottom, usually in a tree, hedge or under an overhang.

Do you remove honeybees?

We look at honeybee situations case by case. Because honeybees are important pollinators, we may suggest a local beekeeper for a swarm before treatment.

Is the treatment safe for my kids and pets?

We treat directly into the nest or entrance, not broadcast across the yard, and we'll tell you how long to keep kids and pets away from the treated spot.

Do you handle emergency bee removal?

Yes. For nests by doors, play areas or businesses, or when someone has been stung, call our 24/7 emergency line at 973-510-2585.
