Think you have bed bugs? Do this first

Bed bugs are a nuisance, not an emergency, but a few quick steps keep them from spreading while you wait for the inspection.

1

Catch one or snap a photo

Tape, a zip bag or a sharp close-up photo is enough. Bed bugs are easy to mix up with carpet beetles, bat bugs and fleas, and the right answer changes the treatment.

2

Keep sleeping in your bed

Moving to the couch or a child’s room feels safer, but the bugs follow you and you end up with two infested rooms instead of one.

3

Run bedding through a hot dryer

Strip the bed and dry sheets, pillowcases and clothes from the floor on high heat. Bag them in clear plastic until the treatment is done.

4

Skip the bug bombs

Foggers don’t reach where bed bugs hide and tend to scatter them into walls and the next room, which makes the job bigger.

5

Call or text 973-510-2585

Tell us what you found, which rooms, and whether you rent or own. We’ll set up the inspection, often the same day.

Signs of bed bugs in your home

Most people notice one of these three things first. Any one of them is worth a closer look.

The bug

A small, flat, brown bug

 • Oval, reddish-brown and about the size of an apple seed
 • Turns rounder and darker red after feeding
 • Moves slowly and hides in seams and cracks

Young bed bugs are pale and as small as a pinhead, so a light-colored sheet and a flashlight help. Keep any bug you catch so we can confirm what it is.

Spots and shells

 • Rusty or black dots on sheets and mattress seams
 • Tiny pale shed skins along the piping
 • Small white eggs in seams and joints

The dark dots are digested blood. They smear like ink when wiped with a damp cloth, which is a quick way to tell them from dirt or lint.

Bites after sleeping

 • Itchy welts in a line or small cluster
 • On arms, neck, shoulders or legs
 • Showing up after nights at home, not outdoors

Bites alone can’t prove bed bugs, because some people never react and other insects and skin conditions look similar. An inspection gives you a real answer.

In apartments and two-family homes, bed bugs also travel through wall voids and pipe gaps, so a unit next door can be the source.

Why bed bugs show up in North Jersey homes

Bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean a home is. They are hitchhikers. They ride in on luggage, backpacks, used furniture and clothing, and once inside they settle near wherever people sleep or sit for long stretches.

From our base in Garfield we see the same three starting points again and again across Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties:

 • Travel and visitors. A hotel stay, a bus trip, a family visit or a guest’s overnight bag. Bites usually start a few days to a couple of weeks after the trip.
 • Shared walls. North Jersey has a lot of two-family houses, garden apartments and older brick buildings. When one unit has bed bugs, they can move along pipes, wiring and baseboards into the next one.
 • Secondhand furniture. A used mattress, couch, headboard or dresser picked up curbside or online can carry bugs and eggs in its joints.

Bed bugs live indoors, so they don’t go away in winter. Heated buildings keep them active all year, and calls rise after summer travel, college move-ins and the holidays. If you’re a tenant, let your landlord know in writing; New Jersey landlords and tenants each have a part to play, and our landlord and commercial service covers buildings with more than one unit.

How we get rid of bed bugs

1

Inspection

We check beds, furniture, baseboards, outlets and closets in every room people use, confirm it is bed bugs and map which rooms are affected.

2

Plan and price

You see what we found and get the price before any work starts. No surprises on the day.

3

Prep sheet

You get our bed bug prep sheet in English or Spanish: what to launder, bag, empty and move so the treatment can reach the bugs.

4

Treatment

We treat every affected room with Aprehend, steam and crack-and-crevice applications, and fit bed bug–proof encasements on the mattress and box spring.

5

Follow-up visit

Eggs can hatch after the first visit, so we come back to check, treat anything new and give you prevention tips so they don’t return.

How much does bed bug treatment cost in NJ?

We don’t post one flat price for bed bugs because two jobs are rarely alike. The inspection tells us what the job really is, and we give you a free quote and the price before any work starts. What changes the cost:

 • How many rooms have bed bugs, and how many beds and couches are in them.
 • How long they have been there. A few bugs in one bed is a smaller job than a spread through the whole home.
 • Type of building. Apartments may need nearby units checked too.
 • Clutter and prep. Good prep lets the treatment reach the bugs on the first visit.
 • Encasements needed for each bed.

Bed Bug Questions

How do I know if I have bed bugs?

Look for small reddish-brown bugs, rusty or black spots and pale shed skins along mattress seams, the box spring and the bed frame. Bites alone can’t confirm it. Text a close photo to 973-510-2585 or book an inspection.

Who is the best bed bug exterminator near me in North Jersey?

Pick a licensed company that inspects before it treats, gives you a prep sheet and comes back for a follow-up. Silver Bullet Pest Control (NJ License 90568B) does all three from our Garfield base.

How do you get rid of bed bugs?

We confirm them with an inspection, give you a prep sheet, treat every affected room with Aprehend, steam and crack-and-crevice work, put encasements on the beds and come back for a follow-up visit.

How much does bed bug treatment cost in NJ?

It depends on how many rooms are affected, how long the bugs have been there and the type of building. We inspect first and give you a free quote before any work starts.

How long does it take to get rid of bed bugs?

Most homes need the treatment visit plus a follow-up, because eggs can hatch after the first visit. A small problem caught early clears faster than one that has spread through the home.

Do I have to throw out my mattress?

Usually not. Mattresses can be treated and then sealed in a bed bug–proof encasement. Dragging an untreated mattress out can spread bugs through the hallway and building.

Should I sleep somewhere else until it’s treated?

No. Keep sleeping in your own bed. If you move, the bugs follow you and spread to a second room or another home.

Do bug bombs work on bed bugs?

No. Foggers don’t reach the cracks and seams where bed bugs hide, and they can push them deeper into walls and nearby rooms.

Do bed bugs spread disease?

Bed bugs are not known to spread disease. Bites can itch, cause allergic reactions or get infected from scratching, and losing sleep is a real cost. Talk to your doctor about bad reactions.

Is the treatment safe for kids and pets?

We use products labeled for indoor use, treat only where it’s needed and tell you when each room is ready to use again. Tell us about babies, pets and fish tanks ahead of time.

Do you treat apartments and rentals?

Yes. We work with tenants, landlords and property managers and recommend checking the units next to the one with bed bugs, since they travel through shared walls.

¿Hablan español? ¿Tratan chinches?

Sí. Inspeccionamos para confirmar las chinches, tratamos camas, muebles y escondites, le damos una hoja de preparación en español y regresamos para revisar. Llame o mande texto al 973-510-2585.
