Signs you have rats or mice

Most people notice the droppings first. Here's what our technicians find on real jobs.

Rodent droppings found in a garage during a Silver Bullet inspection
Droppings

Droppings in the garage or basement

  • Small dark pellets along walls and in corners
  • More of them near food, bird seed or pet food
  • Fresh droppings are dark and soft; old ones are gray and dry

Droppings tell us what you have and how many. Text us a photo and we'll tell you if it's mice or rats.

Entry points

Gaps at pipes and utility lines

  • Droppings next to a gas line, water pipe or AC line
  • Gaps around the dryer vent or garage door
  • Chewed weatherstripping or insulation

Mice squeeze through a gap about the size of a dime; rats through one the size of a quarter. We seal those gaps with steel so they can't chew back through.

Rats

Rats in the yard or home

  • Burrow holes under sheds, decks or along the foundation
  • Larger droppings, about the size of a raisin
  • Gnawed garbage cans and dark grease marks on walls

Rats need a different plan than mice: burrow treatment, bait stations outside, and sealing at ground level.

Rats or mice? How to tell

It matters, because rats and mice need different traps, baits and sealing.

How we get rid of rats and mice

1

Inspect

We check the basement, kitchen, attic, garage and the outside of the house to find nests, travel paths and every way in.

2

Remove

Trapping inside where kids and pets can't reach, and locked, tamper-resistant bait stations outside when they're the right tool.

3

Seal

We close the gaps with steel mesh, hardware cloth and sealant rodents can't chew through — the step that stops them coming back.

4

Clean up & follow up

We clean up droppings and nesting material, then come back to check the traps and make sure the activity has stopped.

Why rats and mice keep coming back

Because the way in is still open. Traps and poison remove the rodents you have, but if the gaps around pipes, vents and the garage door stay open, new ones move right in — especially in the fall, when nights get cold.

  • Store-bought repellents (peppermint oil, ultrasonic plug-ins, dryer sheets) don't stop an infestation. Sealing does.
  • One mouse usually means more. Mice breed fast; by the time you see one, there are often several.
  • Food draws them in: bird seed, pet food, open garbage and fallen fruit feed rats outside and mice inside.
  • Multi-family homes share walls. In two- and three-family houses, we check the units and basements next door too.

That's why every Silver Bullet rodent job includes finding and sealing the entry points — not just setting traps.

Attic, insulation and wiring damage

Rodents don't just make noise — they leave damage behind. In attics, basements and wall spaces, mice and rats shred insulation for nests, leave droppings and urine that cause odor, and gnaw on wood, plastic and wire covering.

  • Insulation: heavily soiled or flattened insulation may need to be removed and replaced after the rodents are gone.
  • Wiring: if you find chewed wires, have a licensed electrician check them.
  • Odor: we remove droppings and nesting material and sanitize the area so the smell doesn't stay.
  • Insurance: many homeowners policies don't cover pest damage, so check your policy and take photos before cleanup.

We point out every bit of damage we find during the inspection, so you know what needs fixing.

Rat & Mouse Exterminator FAQ

How fast can a rat or mouse exterminator come out?

Often the same day. We're based in Garfield and cover Bergen, Passaic and nearby counties — call 973-510-2585 early and we'll give you the first open time.

How much does a rat or mouse exterminator cost?

It depends on how many rodents there are, whether they're inside, outside or both, the size of the home and how much sealing it needs. We give you a free quote and tell you the price before any work starts.

How long does it take to get rid of mice?

Most homes see a big drop in the first week or two. A bigger problem can take a few visits, which is why we come back to check the traps and make sure the activity has stopped.

Do you seal the holes they're getting in through?

Yes. Sealing entry points with steel mesh and rodent-proof materials is part of every rodent job, because traps alone don't stop new rodents from moving in.

Is rodent control safe for kids and pets?

Yes, when it's done right. Traps go where kids and pets can't reach them, outside bait goes in locked, tamper-resistant stations, and we explain every placement.

Do you clean up droppings?

Yes. We clean up rodent droppings and nesting material as part of the job, and we can sanitize the area afterward.

Will mice leave on their own?

Rarely. Once mice find food, water and a warm place, they stay and breed. Removing them and sealing the gaps is what solves it.

Should I seal the holes before the rodents are gone?

Timing matters. If you seal too early, mice or rats can get trapped inside your walls or attic. We trap first, then seal once the activity inside is under control.

Can mice climb brick walls?

Yes. Mice can climb brick, stucco and rough siding, so we check gaps up high — at the roofline, vents and soffits — not just at the ground.

Does homeowners insurance cover rodent damage?

Often not — many policies exclude damage from pests. Check your own policy, and take photos of the damage before cleanup in case you file a claim.
