Rats vs. Mice: How to Tell Who's Living in Your Walls

Something is in the walls. Is it a tiny mouse or a “how is it that big” rat? The answer changes everything about how you deal with it.

Quick answer: Mice are small (about 3 inches plus tail) with big ears and droppings like rice grains (about ¼ inch). Rats are much bigger with smaller ears, thick tails and capsule-shaped droppings about ½–¾ inch long. Mice are curious about traps; rats avoid new things at first.

Why it matters

Mouse traps won’t hold a rat, and rat traps need different placement and patience. Rats also need heavier sealing — hardware cloth and concrete instead of just mesh.

Common questions

How can I tell if I have rats or mice?

Look at droppings: mouse droppings are rice-sized; rat droppings are capsule-shaped and ½–¾ inch long. Rats are also much bigger.

Is it a baby rat or a mouse?

Young rats have small ears, thick tails and big feet for their size; mice have large ears and thin tails.

Do rats and mice live together?

Usually not in the same spot — mice tend to avoid rats.

Are rats harder to get rid of than mice?

Often, because rats are cautious of traps and need heavier-duty sealing.
